Emergency Polio Drive in County To End on Nov 1
Green County wraps up its Emergency Polio fund drive with plans to close on October 31. Since September 16, $2,885.15 has been raised at Mon-Toc banks, not counting outlying areas, with many groups hosting benefit events such as a Turner Hall dance that cleared at least $150 for the fund. Two Green County children died of bulbar polio in nine days, Lynn Chambers 9 of Twin Grove on Sept 2 and Rolland Marsh 31 of Brodhead on Sept 9. Four patients were moved to Madison Orthopedic Hospital for therapy. two remain in the local isolation ward, Alfred Mathys Jr 17 of Darlington and Ruth Beau 10 of Shullsburg.

New Typhoon Races Down on Philippines
A new typhoon bore down on the Philippines threatening more destruction before officials finish counting toll from the worst tropical storm in 50 years. The toll from the typhoon which hit southern Luzon Island Tuesday and Wednesday was 44 dead 460 missing and 27 injured. A Philippines Red Cross spokesman warned the death toll could climb to 600 or more as late reports reach isolated areas.
