Women volunteers to begin United Fund drive in Monroe

Women volunteers in Monroe prepare to call on residents tomorrow night for the United Fund drive. Mrs. John B. Holtshopple, drive chairman, urged residents to give generously as eight ward committees list chairmen and members for the residential campaign across the city.

Public Works Board Accepts Fuel Oil Bid

The Board of Public Works voted to accept bids for fuel oil and will forward the recommendation to the City Council for final action tonight. The session also reviewed bids for carpeting the new City Council chamber and referred the matter to the property committee.

Monroe School system faculty and guests heard an inspirational talk by Allan Shackleton and viewed a preview of the King and I. Rodney Kittelsen led the event in the M Room with new teachers introduced by Supt. Huenink and a musical invitation by Monroe High School students. The program moves to Nicolet style at Lincoln Life Insurance speaker Shackleton urged renewed dedication, communication, and lifelong learning.

Dairymen Group Backs PMA Plan On Milk Pricing Formula

Associated Dairymen Inc representing 36 dairy cooperatives backs a PMA request to have the Chicago market price system use an economic formula reflecting labor feed and other milk costs. Avery A. Vose says a petition will push the Chicago market hearing to include this proposal when it resumes November 2.

Swiss Foreign Minister Friedrich Traugott Wahlen announced he will resign at year end due to health reasons. The 66 year old former director of the UN FAO has served on the seven member Federal Council since 1958.

Watershed planning meetings span seven months at New Glarus High

The Little Sugar River watershed group outlined seven months of Tuesday sessions at New Glarus High School starting with October 26 to discuss the AC program with Donald Siedschlag and James Schwoegler assisting. Upcoming talks include wildlife, game management, and forestry with several topics planned through April. Tony Beutel presides with directors Ernest Rufener John Wettach Paul Klassy Oliver Hustad and Elmer Hoesly. Ed Klassy and Bill Duholm joined the session.

Congregation Looks To Zwingli After Fire

Washington Reformation Church will hold Sunday services at Zwingli United Church of Christ in Monticello at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday. The church board decided last night to use Zwingli facilities while a rebuilding plan is considered. Sunday school will run jointly with Zwingli groups.

The Wisconsin Assembly approved a bill to bar pre trial comments by attorneys and police on guilt or innocence and to restrict published commentary on statements or confessions. Only one member opposed, amid a 73 to 23 vote. an amendment removing a ban on publishing a defendant’s criminal record was adopted.

Astronomers at Caltech say the Ikeya-Seki comet will loop around the sun in a five hour arc starting Wednesday night and may be visible before sunrise Wednesday and again Thursday if it survives. Pitts Condition Remains Critical After Friday Injury

Leslie Pitts, 17, Orangeville High School football player, lies in critical condition at St. Clare Hospital after a Friday night collision in Orangeville. The unconscious student, son of Lyndon and Mrs Pitts of rural McConnell, previously sustained a mild concussion on September 24 and was released from Freeport Memorial Hospital on September 28.

Mrs. Wrennie M. Riese 71 died unexpectedly at 6 am in her home at 2824 13th Street after medical care.
