John L. Lewis announced the end of the six state soft coal strike saying he acts in the public interest and that the stoppage will be effective Monday. The strike had caused about half of the nation’s 450,000 idle miners.
The American Federation of Manufacturers and United States Chamber of Commerce urged a 20 percent cut in individual income taxes for next year and favored repeal of excess profits and capital stock taxes. They testified before the Senate finance committee, estimating savings of about 8 billion dollars and a balanced budget by 1948, while calling for prewar excise tax levels.
Francis Lambeley longtime I C here agent died in Madison Hospital after a 10 day illness. He had served Monroe since 1907, worked for the railroad since 1886 starting as a water boy at 12. He left school at 16 to pursue railroading and taught telegraphy to two of his five sons Earl and Harold, who became lawyers. The family survives his wife and five children.

President Truman is to appear before Congress next Tuesday to deliver a message on peacetime universal military training. Speaker Rayburn said the joint session will convene at 11 30 a m. The plan follows calls for unified military forces and mergers of the war and navy departments as a step toward world peace and security.
The 1934 Wisconsin atom smasher project led by Prof. R G Herb evolved into a high pressure electrostatic generator reaching 4 million volts by 1941. Dr J L McKibben built a smaller unit used in biology, while Breit pushed for atomic bomb research. By 1943 the lab moved to Los Alamos, with key Wisconsin associates named, and Herb later led radar work at MIT.
Monroe adult education class enrollment is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the high school. Regular class work will begin Tuesday, Oct. 23, and will continue Tuesday and Thursday nights for 18 weeks. There must be 10 or more to start classes. Courses include shorthand, typing, bookkeeping, home economics, crafts, citizenship, Spanish, industrial arts, physical education for women, with possible other offerings if demand. The program starts at 7 40 p m and features Ted Jones Lake Mills Guadalcanal veteran who lost parts of three limbs. Jones will speak briefly at Kiwanis tomorrow and Gratiot Friday.
