About 1 500 attended the county mechanical corn picking contest at Brodhead. officials had predicted 10 000. More than 40 farm machinery displays drew attention while the contest ran from 9 a m. with results due late afternoon. Regional competition and a state contest follow, with grounds on the C S Pierce farm.
Registration for adult night classes will be held next Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the high school led by T. R. Holyoke assistant principal. Regular classes begin the following Thursday, run Tuesdays and Thursdays for 18 weeks, for students 16 or older. Courses include cabinet making, wiring, art, English and citizenship, knitting, crafts, sewing, and typing with several instructors named. A $2 registration fee is refundable if participants attend over 80 percent of sessions. more courses may be added if enrollments exceed ten.
In Hammond and Highland Indiana the Little Calumet River stays near sandbag dikes as Yellow River rises toward a 17.5 foot crest in Plymouth. Red Cross warns sandbag walls cannot withstand larger rises while volunteers reinforce dikes. About 2,000 homes flooded in Hammond area and surrounding suburbs. 400 families homeless in Plymouth. 200 homes flooded near Lake of the Woods. United Nations in New York reports sharp Western opposition to a Philippine proposal to recess the general disarmament debate for a month. The plan would suspend until November 15 while a working group studies East and West arms proposals. An American informant said the US would back a Canadian move to continue the debate in the Political Committee and Assembly and then hand the issue to five powers after December. Canada planned to present its proposal in the Political Committee. Philippine delegate Serrano revised his submission. The US informant called the suggestion impractical and without warning.
Former President Harry Truman says Republican leaders fail to govern for all. Margaret Truman read the message to 650 Democrats at a $54 banquet rally for 1954 elections. Adlai Stevenson sent a note of encouragement while Gov. Frank Clement charged national suspicion against the GOP. Stephen Mitchell criticized Defense Secretary Wilson over dog remark at a news conference.
Alaska returns from 263 precincts show E. L. Bartlett leading for Congress with 2,798 votes to 1,485 for Barbara Dimoc, as Democrats gain ground in legislature races. Early Alaska results favor Democratic candidates in the Anchorage and southeastern regions, while Republicans lead for Labor Commissioner and Territorial Treasurer positions.
The annual meeting is set for Saturday December 4 at Turner Hall Monroe. Cheese entries will be scored the week prior and trophies awarded to first place. A new placque will honor the top scoring cheesemaker across state and county fairs this year.

The 23 hour riot at the South Dakota State Penitentiary ended with inmates returning to normal behavior after hostages were freed. Gov. Sigurd Anderson and Warden G Norton Jameson ordered an investigation into causes while National Guard units, sheriff deputies, and officers outside the block ensured safety as the riot collapsed.
U S Attorney Leo Rover accuses Federal District Judge Luther W Youngdahl of fixed bias in favor of Owen Lattimore and requests disqualification from Lattimore perjury trial slated for January 10. Youngdahl, a former Minnesota governor and state supreme court judge, declined to comment.
William C. Eckles of Kansas City Missouri was appointed general manager of the Pure Milk Products Cooperative. He succeeds William O. Perdue who died in a drowning accident last May, chosen from 70 applicants by William F. Groves, president of the cooperative.
Dr Will B Gnagi is nominated to fill a vacancy on the Kiwanis Club board of directors. The board will vote at the October 21 meeting. A film is scheduled for tomorrow at 12 15 pm during the club meeting at the Swiss Wheel restaurant.

Kenneth Mayer said the low bid covers moving equipment, setup, explosive charges, test pump operation, test bowl assembly, and related work. Work starts next week and lasts at least four weeks with equipment already at Sun Prairie.
