President Nixon said he will announce two Supreme Court selections next week with Sen. Robert Byrd and at least two women among those under consideration. He noted Byrd is definitely on the list and denied dope stories about his choice.
Three more fatalities Monday raise Wisconsin 1971 traffic toll to 878, two elderly men struck near their homes. Thomas Tallackson, 85, was killed on Wisconsin 35 in Vernon County near La Crosse. John Kurz, 78, was fatally injured on Wisconsin 31 as he crossed for a news. John P. Cox, 17, Milwaukee, died when a car left Wisconsin 57 in Ozaukee County near Sheboygan.
Two pulpwood cutters found the wreckage of a light plane and the bodies of Frank Majersky and his wife Doris, missing since Oct. 1 during a Milwaukee to Phillips flight. The tragedy ended a lengthy land and air search, with discovery in hardwood trees eight miles south of Spirit Falls by Delbert Gustafson and Harry Pearson.
The State Building Commission approved 50000 of a 693000 planning request for phase one of the UW Medical Center project. Gov Lucey and two Republicans blocked a larger 346500 planning vote, while agreeing planning will be reviewed next month. The project relocates UW Medical School and University Hospitals to the near West Side with total cost estimated at 150 million and phase one at 45 million. An earlier 1.8 million planning appropriation has run out.
Final fall enrollment of the nine former Wisconsin state universities drops 87 from last year to 64 131 while the total for the new University of Wisconsin system reaches 133 685 with UW Madison at 69 554. The Milwaukee Common Council voided its secret ballot seating of Jimmie G. Davison 17-0 after learning he had not been pardoned for a 1959 rape conviction. Davison appealed, citing his ex-convict status, while officials noted a prior 11-7 vote to fill the vacancy created by Vel Phillips’s resignation.
The Monroe Board of Education met at noon and heard Superintendent Lee Olsen present three alternatives if the state budget fails: cut the local budget, raise the tax levy, or divert funds from the swimming fund. He noted a 141,630 deficit in state aid and that the mill rate would rise from 19.72 to 20.89 to cover it. The meeting postponed decisions to Monday night. Also approved was William Itzin as Northside Elementary Principal starting November 1, moving from Mt. Horeb.
Leonard Schoonover of Janesville, a business representative for the Teamsters Union, has ended his duties. He confirmed the dismissal would not be elaborated beyond stating it is true, in comments to a Janesville Daily Gazette reporter.
Monroe Public Schools observe National School Lunch Week by serving the Universal Menu including a pizza burger or Salisbury steak with sides. The lunch program now reaches East and South Schools with about 1,650 daily participants, roughly 60 percent of the student enrollment.
