17 Corn Picking Contest Seeks State Crown
A warm October day brings 17 contestants to Colburn Broughton farm near Albany for the state mechanical corn picking contest. Regional winners include Ralph Figs and Richard Barth. 17 entrants began trials at 9 00 a m with the main contest at 10 00 a m. Miss Maize Queen Geradine Huebner of Beloit was crowned and will advance to the national contest in St Joseph Mo next Saturday.

Investigators sift through wreckage on Medicine Bow Peak after a United Air Lines DC4 coach plane from New York to San Francisco crashed 25 miles west of its airway near Laramie. Driver Pinned Under Vehicle On Highway 59
Raymond B. Blumer 26 of Monroe died when his dump truck left Highway 59 four miles northeast of Monroe, rolled over an embankment, and pinned him beneath the vehicle. Eyewitness Dave Herwitz said Blumer crept uphill with a load, then the truck struck a power pole causing a substation switch to trip. Power outages disrupted radio reporting until Monroe and Madison offices relayed calls. Coroner not planning an inquest. Blumer survived by wife Shirley Mae and three children plus his parents.
