Wisconsin led the nation in milk production in 1963 with nearly 184 billion pounds, about 15 percent of U.S. output, and captured 11 first places in manufactured dairy products. It also ranked first in total cheese production at 704,381,000 pounds, 43.2 percent of national cheese output.
Monroe high school exchange students will attend a Big Ten football game as guests of Theodore Roosevelt high school in Wyandotte Michigan. They depart Thursday November 5 and arrive in time for the Michigan Illinois game in Ann Arbor. Wyandotte marks its 20th student exchange, first high school program in the U S Monroe makes its sixth trip. David Deininger chairs the group with Leon Wittner and Sue Goecks as secretaries and treasurer.
Johnny Mangrith a Pomona four year old won the 1964 hog calling championship at the Los Angeles County Fair. He cried Piggy piggy and drew six big pigs across the pavilion. Runner-up was Sarah E Staffstall an 85 year old Cucamonga resident. The boy’s father works for the IRS and voices hog calls as a hobby.
The United Fund Drive began in Monroe with more than 20 solicitors at a kickoff luncheon. Richard Rhyner outlined soliciting rules while L J Schroeder reported over 250 volunteers and 10 percent of the goal raised. Ward chairmen listed and a detailed 1964 target by organization followed, totaling 19475 dollars. Ward Eight chair Clara Thompson supported the drive expected to finish in October.
The Monroe Woman's Club appeals for toys and dolls to stock Christmas stockings. Two Monroe High School clubs will repair and paint items like bicycles and wagons. The Monroe high school chorus announces the musical Bye Bye Birdie to be presented November 20 and 21. Cast includes Sharon Hinebaugh as Kim with Marcia Kundert, Marsha Manos, Kathy Bernet, and John Schuetze among others. John Close directs with Miss Patt Van Dyke assisting.
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Mrs. Nelson A Happy Rockefeller lost her custody bid for the four children she gave up to marry New York’s governor. State Supreme Court Justice Joseph F. Gagliardi kept primary custody with Dr. James S. Murphy per a Sun Valley 1963 divorce. The judge said the best interests of the children require they stay with their father. The ruling noted the children Malinda age 4, Carol 8, Margaretta 11, and James 13, are healthy and content.
Senate Rules Committee opened the Bobby Baker inquiry with James A. Blaser testifying on the District of Columbia Stadium bid. The session referenced a $35,000 alleged overpayment tied to Matthew H. McCloskey and Don B. Reynolds, with claims of funneling to the Kennedy Johnson campaign. Justice Department and FBI involvement followed Johnson’s order for scrutiny.

MILWAUKEE Former Maj. Gen. Edwin A. Walker of Dallas filed a 2 million libel suit in U S District Court Wednesday against The Journal Company publisher of The Milwaukee Journal.
Col Roy F. Zinser a Monroe native receives the Legion of Merit at Fort Monroe Va retiring after 36 years of service. The ceremony honors his command direction at Fort Monroe since 1961 and features a reception with over 200 guests before his September 30 retirement.
Four Monroe men plan to attend the Ohio Swiss Festival in Sugarcreek to study a similar program for Cheese Day next year. Assemblyman G Fred Galli, Robert Bussen, Victor Schlinger, and pilot Robert Hahlen will travel by plane. Featured entertainer Mrs Roy Vetterli of New Glarus, a yodeler and accordionist, will perform.
Wisconsin cheddar market shows steady activity with adequate supplies. Prices list cheddar 37 to 40 percent, 40 pound blocks 37 to 40 percent, single daisies and other varieties around 40 percent. Market notes longhorns and midgets at 40 to 43 percent.
Helen Zimmerli notes the Green County Frozen Food Market at 512 18th Avenue reaches its 25th year with Ray L. Pavlak as a surviving partner alongside George Wenger and Hervey Hoesly. The locker plant, started in 1943 with 456 lockers, has grown to 545 and serves Green County and nearby counties. Wenger handles meat cutting while Hoesly and Pavlak expanded operations amid rising home freezers.
The hurricane Hilda strengthened to 125 mph as it moved through the Gulf of Mexico. Residents along low coastal areas fled inland as the Weather Bureau warned of possible Louisiana flooding and a potential New Orleans Texas landfall. Evacuation centers opened while oil operations shut down and civil defense mobilized. Grande Isle marked the anniversary of a 1955 tragedy as 8 percent of its 3,500 residents evacuated.
The annual College Night for Monroe area juniors and seniors and their parents will be Monday Oct 12 at 7 30 pm in the Monroe high school lecture hall. Three half hour sessions let attendees choose. Representatives from University of Wisconsin system schools will discuss costs curriculums and answer questions.
