The Ecumenical Council approved in principle a key schema on the nature and governance of the Roman Catholic Church to be debated. It seeks a simpler pastoral form, expands bishops' role under papal authority, and advances discussion toward a plenary vote next year.
Special holiday hours announced for Christmas season with extended evenings. Santa Claus will greet children from a Santamobile on the south side of the Courthouse. Mongoe stores stay open 9 p.m. December 11 and 12, 9:30 p.m. December 13, and 9:30 p.m. December 16 to 23 except 9 p.m. December 21 and closed December 22. Regular 5 p.m. closure resumes December 24 for Christmas Eve.
First in a series outlining benefits from United Fund contributions. The Boy Scouts of America in Monroe receive the largest allotment, $5,300, within a $20,950 campaign budget. Funds pool with community chest drives from Freeport, Lancaster, Platteville and Warren plus 48 other communities to meet a $52,835 budget for the U S Grant Council. The council supports over 4,000 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Explorers across Green, Lafayette and Grant Counties Wisconsin Joe Daviess Carroll Stephenson Counties Illinois with a four‑person professional staff and two offices.
Richard Rhyner, Monroe field executive, oversees 99 Boy Scouts, 142 Cub Scouts and 35 Explorers in five cub packs, three troops, and three posts while Valley District totals 258 Cubs, 332 Scouts and 90 Explorers in 10 packs, 14 troops and six posts. About 100 volunteers support the program as funds fund leadership and camping rather than troop activities. James B. Hansen, 43, crippled in a 21 year old automobile accident, died at 6 30 this morning at his home 1313 13th avenue. Son of John F. and Beatta Rood Hansen he had been bedrid den years, undergone eight corrective operations in one year. Born October 25 1919 in Argyle he attended Lamont Township schools and worked on farms before Burgess Battery employment. He leaves five sisters Mrs Wilbert Andrews Argyle Mrs Elmer Krohn Mr Horeb Mrs Morris Hare Madison Mrs Jacob Wyss Jr Argyle and Mrs Ray Holby Madison. He was a Grace Lutheran church member. Funeral services 3 15 p m Thursday at Stuessy funeral home Rev James C Plymire officiating. Burial Woodlawn cemetery Argyle. Friends may call after noon tomorrow.

City street workers began widening the 800 block of 16th avenue near United Telephone Co. The west side will gain 6 1 2 feet and the street will be blacktopped after final approval by the Board of Public Works at yesterday's city hall meeting.
High waves and a dangerous cross current overturned 15 small landing craft carrying Marines near Molokai, 50 miles southeast of Honolulu. Seven Marines and Navy personnel were injured in the Monday war games.

The Sept 18 burglary at Monroe Country Club is solved after Douglas Ebneter and Raymond Warne admitted involvement during interviews at the Rock County jail. Both are to be sentenced Monday in Rock County Court after earlier convictions in Avalon burglaries. The incident at the Swiss Room left custodian Fred Burkhalter uninjured.
New York stocks drifted higher with blue chips rebounding in late trading. Gains ranged from fractions to over a point as the market firmed after a mixed open, peaking mid-session before some profit taking trimmed top advances.
Joseph Valachi testified before the Senate Investigations subcommittee that Vito Genovese remains connected to Las Vegas gambling and to Meyer Lansky, despite Genovese’s narcotics conviction and imprisonment. Valachi said Genovese still leads New York operations and hinted at mob involvement in Abe Reles’s death, with conflicting accounts of who caused it.
Wisconsin Attorney General George Thompson warned residents not to assume organized crime cannot gain power here. He announced plans to question underworld informer Joseph Valachi about links between Milwaukee, Kansas City, and New York gangster elements, and rumors about retired Chicago figures active in upstate Wisconsin.
