Christmas mailing deadlines advance due to USPS strike

Postmaster Burlyn Nelson announces earlier deadlines for domestic parcels and letter mail to ensure delivery by Christmas. Dec 3 is the parcel deadline and Dec 10 for letter mail and greeting cards, as strike related volume rises nationwide and threatens backlogs.

Bloodmobile visits Monroe sets Dec. 14 at Armory

The Red Cross Bloodmobile returns to Monroe on Tuesday December 14 at the National Guard Armory. City Blood Chairman Mrs. Robert Phillips says Mrs. Robert Wood is the new donor recruitment chairman and will contact past donors to set appointments. The local quota is 185 pints. past drives have exceeded it.

Youth Center opens for recreation activities

The Monroe Community Center offers free youth recreation for fifth grade through high school with Friday 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. slots. Activities include pool, bumper pool, air hockey, shuffleboard, table tennis, a juke box and TV. Tournaments in several games will run late December. plaques honor winners.

Wisconsin Supreme Court voids negative school aid plan

The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled the negative school aids program unconstitutional. Justice Conner Hansen led a 4-3 majority finding the plan violated uniform taxation rules, as revenues came from local taxes rather than state funds. Dissenters cited Gov. Lucey appointees Abrahamson and Day.

Dyke asks Wisconsin Supreme Court for Milwaukee recount

Two minor parties asked the Wisconsin Supreme Court to order a recount of Milwaukee County ballots from the November 2 election and to probe state voter registration. William Dyke and Paul Greenberg said fraud swung 11 electoral votes to Jimmy Carter, challenging election integrity.
