Yule Capers to Feature in Monroe High Concert

Monroe High School presents Christmas Capers with Yule Capers featuring the Prayer and Dream Pantomime from Hansel and Gretel. The program, directed by Joseph Rieraldo and Allan F Barnard, includes the Toy Shop narrated by Susan Schilt. Performances are 8 p.m. Thursday Dec 7 at the Junior High School Auditorium.

Soldier Receives Purple Heart in Vietnam Defense

SP4 Dorian L. Hermanson of the 1st Battalion 4th Artillery earned the Purple Heart for wounds in defense of U S Army positions along the DMZ. The ceremony was at Dong Ha battalion HQ. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Alton Hermanson who farmed locally before moving to Madison. He reported to Fort Bliss on Feb 15 to complete his duty. A farewell gathering was held at the Hermanson home and he departed Madison Airport for Texas.

Light on Horse Case Dismissed In Pecatonica Court

Mrs. Marion N. Carter, 64, riding without a light on a horse involved in a collision with an auto, had the charge dismissed by Magistrate Stuart Hyer who noted no law requires a light on horse drawn vehicles and questioned where a light could be placed. The Sept 19 incident occurred near Pecatonica.

Monroe dairyman Leonard Wiess reports his tractor caught fire in a lean-to by the dairy barn about 9 this morning. Firemen arrived quickly and saved the barn. only the tractor was damaged. The farmer, living west of the Municipal Airport on Highway 59, faces rush to harvest and repair 40 acres of corn.

Minimum wage hike set for women and older minors

MADISON The state minimum wage for women and minors 18 and over will rise five cents to 1.30 hourly on July 1. The commission tied future adjustments to the federal consumer price index, with automatic changes every two years. No increase for under 18s. current rate remains 1.10. There is no state minimum for men. Antiwar pickets were held on the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee campuses with peaceful demonstrations.
