Five hunters were killed in Wisconsin over the two day weekend opening the deer season. One died of a heart attack and a father and son wounded each other in a freak accident. The seven day season ends the day after Thanksgiving.
In Wisconsin counties including Tomah Crivitz Oconto and Shawano hunters faced tragedies from stray bullets and intra family shootings. Burkhalter and Erdman injuries report delayed. Hart Ernest Burkhalter 60 remains in hospital after shoulder wound. Arnold Erdman 30 bled to death from knee wound. Norman E. Anderson 30 shot by mistaken identity. Roger Krueger 21 struck near heart. John R. Foster 51 died of heart attack after deer trip. Frank Thunder 56 and Gordon 13 shot each other during hunt near Black River Falls.
Mrs Fred Yost 86 of 1122 30th avenue died at 10 30 am at St Clare hospital from complications after a broken hip. Born Barbara Blumer in Switzerland she came to America as a child and settled in Jefferson township. She married Fred Yost in 1909 and farmed in Cadiz Township before moving to Monroe. Survives a stepson Avery Yost and a niece Mrs Anna Geissberger. Services Wednesday 1 30 pm at Shriner Neushwander funeral home with Rev Walter Waeckerle officiating burial in Cadiz cemetery.
Albany special recounts Ernestine Malkow born November 25 1886 in Doerlitz Germany. She came to the area as a young girl, lives alone in good health, was married to Ernest Malkow who died nine years ago. She has two sons Elmer Madison Arthur Evansville and Mrs. W F Kean Riverside Ill plus five grandchildren. Weather note notes warmer temps and light snow.
President elect Eisenhower announced Esra Taft Benson of Salt Lake City a former National Council of Farmer Cooperatives official as secretary of agriculture. Benson 53 was a Taft supporter and comes as Hoffman declined the cabinet offer citing unusual circumstances. Eisenhower met Hoffman during the day and planned talks with Nixon and other nominees as he fills posts for commerce labor and postmaster general.
A faint radio signal offered the only clue to the fate of 52 men aboard a C-124 Globe Master missing since Saturday night after departing McChord, bound for Elmendorf. Weather hampered search as 24 planes prepared to fan out toward Middleton Island, with SOS on 500 kilocycles possibly from liferafts Gibson Girl transmitters.
A government official says the selective service plans to study manpower and prepare for a possible 19 year old draft change by January end. Maj. Gen. Hershey had earlier paused the 19 year old draft and may adjust orders by three month steps, with boards first handling youths over 19 years and 9 months before lowering the age.
Harry Hirshheimer of LaCrosse was associated with Succumbs vice Co from 1893 until it was acquired by Allis Chalmers Mfg Co in 1929. The note marks his long involvement with the company and its 1929 takeover.
In Greensburg Pennsylvania on a cold day a 15 year old boy James W Gibson was fatally shot when a log dropped from a stack of shotguns carried by him and three companions as they searched for wood for a fire. The teens sang hymns as Gibson lay dying until a doctor arrived.
Mrs Aame Dietmeier 81 died at the Greene County home at 3 35 am yesterday. Services set for 1 30 pm tomorrow at Stuessy funeral home with Rev Homer Retzlaff officiating. Burial in Staver church cemetery. Survivor list includes three children Ralph Dietmeier, Lawrence Dietmeier and Mrs John Abels plus four brothers and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Alfred Bauer Sr., owner of the Bloomer Advance, his son Alfred Jr., and 3-year-old Michael were rescued from a wrecked burning car by two passing deer hunters on State Highway 40 Saturday night. The car left the highway, rolled over, and ignited, with the horn blast drawing the rescuers.
In Rock County along Highway 1, Mactulough Tae drove an afternoon route. He swerved to avoid a deer and struck the animal, killing it but sustaining extensive car damage.

The former Tabby Mader’s grandparents were Marty. Survivors include her husband a physician a daughter Prudence and a son Peter both at home a brother Carl of Alameda California and several cousins Fred Marty the Carl Marty Sr family Mrs. E B Rosa and Miss Lillian Gempeler. Father Herman Oby died in March 1947.
Volksstimme of Vienna says Noel and Hermann Field were arrested behind the Iron Curtain after disappearing in 1949. The U S Office of Strategic Services links and double-agent theories swirl around Noel, Hermann, Herta, and the adopted daughter as their fates remain unresolved.
Tomorrow marks the 98th birthday of Lafayette County’s Sara Jane Stuart who lives on a farm near South Wayne. A former Kempton child, she married Robert Stuart in Monroe in 1876 and has remained active with Reading, church and Eastern Star duties while recovering from recent falls. She has one living child Mayme Segner, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. husband died in 1908 and two sons and two daughters have died.
In Virginia Minnesota Mrs. Clif ford Perela returned from church to find her 12 year old son dead and a ten year old son dying from gunshot wounds. The deputy coroner ruled the deaths accidental with Harley shot during play and Arthur likely injuring himself in remorse.
The U S Parole Board unanimously denied the parole application of former State Department official Alger Hiss after a hearing at Lewisburg Penitentiary. Chairman Dr George G Killinger said the panel carefully reviewed the record and kept Hiss incarcerated on perjury conviction citing his admission of lying about secret documents to Communist agents.
In Baghdad a military headed government dissolved all political parties closed 12 newspapers and banned demonstrations after weekend rioting that killed at least 11 and wounded 58. Troops patrolled streets as mobs attacked the U S Information Service office the British Embassy and police stations. General Nur Aldin Mahmoud assumed control ordering martial law and forming a new cabinet with four civilian newcomers amid sweeping changes.

Robert Rhine principal of a high school near Medford died Sunday when a car missed a curve. A collision at 8th Avenue and 71st Street involved Elmer G. Huttel and farmer Herman C. Buergis. neither driver injured.
The Big Ten athletic directors chose the Wisconsin Badgers to represent the conference in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day against Southern California after a dramatic finish. Wisconsin tied with Purdue for the title at 4-1-1, edging Purdue in the vote for the Rose Bowl berth amid co-champion drama and USC’s undefeated run.
