Deer Registrations Rise in Green and Lafayette Counties

Deer registrations show slow gains across Green and Lafayette as the 1965 gun season data come in from six stations. Green County totals include 145 deer by mid morning, with 59 at the sheriff's office, New Glarus, and Brodhead stations. Lafayette reports 199 by yesterday afternoon across Darlington, Yellowstone, and Belmont.

Lewis Announces Candidacy for Green County Sheriff 1966

Green County chief deputy M John Lewis declared his plan to run for sheriff in the 1966 fall elections seeking the Republican nomination to succeed W E Deininger who cannot seek another term. Lewis, a 13 year law enforcement veteran, has served since 1963 as chief deputy after time with Monroe police and the sheriff’s department. He has FBI training and a juvenile session in Madison.

Brodhead Council OKs 2.18 Tax Rise and 216 538 Budget

Brodhead adopts a total budget of 216 538.75 and an increased tax rate of 51.50 per thousand. The school tax rises 2.63 while city levy stays at 12.74. Budget funds include police fire sewer library and park projects with a future need for engineering services.

Eight year old Nancy Keller from Bastrop Louisiana was abducted Sunday while playing near her home. A playmate reported the kidnapper forced her into an old car and drove away rapidly. The girl called her father Monday saying she was safe and asking him to come get her.

Christmastime Pinery Near Albany Under New Ownership

Don S. Trow sells the pinery part of his farm to Dr. Karl R. Schoenenberger of Evansville who will operate a 120 acre lower farm with his three sons John Jim and Jake while Trow keeps the 100 acre upper farm. The Schoenenberger family plans year to year expansion for hunting fishing and wildlife and will offer self cut trees boughs and weekend access through Christmas in a winter wonderland setting near Albany Wisconsin.

Thanksgiving Holiday For Postal Employees

R. J. Myers postmaster reminded patrons that Thursday will be observed as a legal holiday at all postal installations. There will be no window service on Thanksgiving no city or rural deliveries and a holiday schedule in effect for collections receipts and dispatch of mail. Normal holiday lock box service maintained and special delivery service will be provided.

Guide for Givers Opens Holiday Shopping Edition in Monroe

The expanded edition features local stores inaugurating the 1965 holiday season and Christmas themed stories. Santa Claus arrives in Monroe Friday at 2 p.m. aboard the fire truck and will reside in his mobile home by the Courthouse. Beginning Wednesday Dec 8 stores stay open nights, except Saturdays Dec 11 and 18, and Friday Dec 24 they close at 5 p.m.
