Wisconsin deer hunt claims 12 lives in opening weekend

The nine day Wisconsin deer season opened with ten hunters dying of heart attacks and two shot. Victims include Warren Thompson 34 of LaCrosse and Richard Johnson 16 of Waupaca. Heart attack deaths spanned multiple counties from Jackson to Washburn with ages from 44 to 69.

Deer Hunters Near Record Pace in Green County

About 184 deer registered at three county stations by 10 am with many shot in adjacent counties. Details list dozens of hunters in Monroe and surrounding towns. Green County totals include 67 registered at New Glarus and 47 at Brodhead stations with bucks and does reported. The three day season runs through next Sunday and registration closes at 5 pm tomorrow.

Two Brothers Collide in Cars In Green County

Two brothers in separate vehicles were among eight weekend traffic accidents investigated by Green County sheriff deputies. Richard Wiesenberg 24 Monticello stopped to avoid a deer. Erwin S. Wiesenberg 18 rear collided. Several other drivers, including Diana Dehmer 18 Albany and Thomas Hall 18 Rockford, were involved in sideswipes and crashes across nearby county trunks.

Calvin Hefty Dies at 38 in New Glarus

Calvin Royal Hefty, 38, a Korean War veteran and New Glarus resident, died unexpectedly Saturday night while working as a projectionist at the New Glarus Theater. He was chaplain of the Green County American Legion council and past commander of the Stuessy Kuenzi post, plus longtime Green County Heart Association chairman. Born April 3, 1926, in Exeter Township, he served in Korea and Japan after enlisting in 1948 and was discharged in 1952. He was confirmed Swiss United Church of Christ member.

Rail Strike Threat Delayed As Talks Resume In Washington

Santa Claus Arrives Friday In Monroe Parade

Santa Claus will arrive in Monroe on Friday at 2 p.m. via the fire department truck and will stay in his trailer on the Courthouse lawn. Free treats for children will be available and accommodations are provided by the Monroe Chamber of Commerce. Beginning Wednesday Dec 9 most stores will stay open nights though closing early on Saturdays Dec 12 19 and 24.
