Support Needed For Fund Drive In Green County

Green County Association for Retarded Children joins national groups in their annual fund drive during National Retarded Children's Week. The drive ends Thanksgiving Day November 24. Mrs. Frank Salzwedel chairs the effort to expand facilities and programs for mentally retarded residents, including the lack of special rooms and a Day Care Center.

Car Hits Deer Injuring Driver Near Attica

A deer was killed and driver Cheryl K. Briggs of Belleville sustained leg injuries after her car struck an eight point deer on Beahke Road three miles north of Attica. The vehicle left the road, rolled into a ditch, and totaled. Briggs was taken by her father to a doctor in Evansville. Fence posts on Behnke Brothers property were damaged in the crash.

Meredith Denied Permission to Speak at Mississippi Day Rally

James H. Meredith says Roy Wilkins of the NAACP bans him from addressing a Mississippi Day rally in Columbus Ohio Friday. Meredith, first Black student at the University of Mississippi, calls it intolerable. Wilkins declined to comment on Merediths statements.

Monroe schools announce Thanksgiving holiday break

All Monroe schools will dismiss at the regular time tomorrow after a full day. There will be no classes Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving. Classes resume Monday. Announcement by D. J. Huenink, superintendent, and St. Victor's School. Regular bus schedules will be followed for public schools.

Holiday Mail Delivery Schedule Impacts Monroe

Post holiday notice states Thursday November 24 national holiday nationwide to observe. Monroe post office will have no window service deliveries by city postmen or rural carriers. Normal lock box service remains and special delivery continues with holiday collection, receipt and dispatch observed only at Monroe.

Highway 69 Improvements Listed by State Highway Commission

The State Highway Commission plans upgrades costing 337000 on Highway 69 and 325000 on 7th Ave in Monroe. Total 2.06 miles of base and concrete on Highway 69 near Monticello New Glarus, plus 1.7 miles of grading base and concrete on 7th Ave Monroe. Right of way and engineer work in Monroe estimated at 318000.

Aubrey James Norvell of Hernando Mississippi will surrender December 2 to begin a two year penitentiary term for the ambush shooting of civil rights leader James H Meredith last June.

Body in the Grave Janesville Worker Identified

Skeletal remains found in a shallow grave near Gibbs Lake in Rock County are identified as Rappert James Ashmore, a 58 year old Janesville resident who disappeared in May 1964. His two sons and Rock County authorities described the identification based on dentures shoes a key purse with car and dog collar keys and a Fairbanks shop badge. Investigators continue examining the site two miles from the Schneebergers farm on land owned by Mrs Lela Ellingson.

Parade of mourners marks Kennedy anniversary at Arlington

On the third anniversary of John F. Kennedy's assassination more than 16 million visitors have filed to Arlington National Cemetery to honor Kennedy and his two children. Daily attendance has fallen from 50,000 to about 15,000 yet remains steady on special days. A new granite memorial, designed by John Carl Warnecke, is nearing completion and will house the Kennedy site with a 200 foot circular walkway and an inscribed wall from the Kennedy inaugural speech. The eternal flame will be moved to the new site and kept as a central symbol.

Thanksgiving Feast Highlights U S Troops in Viet Nam

The United States fighting man in Viet Nam will receive a hot Thanksgiving feast including shrimp cocktail turkey with giblet gravy bread dressing cranberry sauce candied sweet potatoes mixed vegetables and pie. In contrast North Vietnamese and Viet Cong eat about 14 pounds daily of rice salt fish and nuoc mam. Paul R. Santa to Light Courthouse Christmas on Friday

Santa arrives Friday with Rudolph possibly guiding the way due to missing evergreen boughs for Yale decorations delaying the traditional lights on the square. Santa will be on the square in his Santamobile at 2 p.m. after arriving by fire truck and will greet shoppers as stores stay open.

Two Are Dead In Auto Mishap In Rockford

Police report a high speed chase ended when a car plunged into the Rock River, killing two 27 year old occupants Carlton Jackson and William Beck. Patrolman Tim Fulton witnessed the pursuit and joined the icy rescue effort. The vehicle lacked license plates.

Area Youth Injured Foot While Deer Hunting

Guy Loeffel aged 17 of Monticello was taken to St. Clare Hospital at 7 45 am after accidentally shooting himself in the foot during a deer hunt with companions. He suffered a compound fracture of the second and third toes on his right foot and was reported in satisfactory condition. He is the son of Mrs Aline Loeffel.

Four Area Residents Naturalized in Janesville Term

Four locals gained U.S. citizenship in a Rock County Court session in Janesville led by Judge Arthur L. Luebke. The class of 16 included Marie Rosa Nideroest and Alfred Metz of Monticello, and Helene and Karl Hofmann of New Glarus. Other new citizens hailed from Iran Italy Scotland Czechoslovakia Canada and Japan. The Japanese entrant was four-year-old LuAnne Wendler of Milton Junction.
