Monroe Mayor Victor N. Schiller spoke to the Jaycees at Idle Hour Mansion on budget prep and city issues. He questioned fluoridation, warned of garbage-rate hikes from 1.25 to 1.50 monthly, and urged businesslike government and closer city county cooperation.
U S District Judge Edward Weinfield barred the Bethlehem Steel Corp and Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co from merging in an 88 page ruling. He held the deal would violate Section 7 of the Clayton Act, likely lessen competition and risk a monopoly in the iron and steel industry. The proposed entity would have assets totaling 2.71 billion dollars.
The Associated Press reports two more hunting fatalities from heart attacks in Wisconsin for the 1958 deer season, bringing total deaths to 18 with eight from gunfire and ten from coronary failure. Notable cases include Lawrence Ervin, 54, of Hammond Indiana, the 10th heart victim, who died while hunting west of Wausaukee, and Walter Werner, 64, of Mukwonago, found dead near Necedah after being reported missing.

A federal court opened a four hour review of Virginia’s massive resistance school closure law, seeking additional briefs by December fifth. The state argues the closures are a valid police power move to avoid integration, while officials warn of disastrous effects on students and college access. About 3,000 of 10,000 pupils affected lack instruction, with others in private tutoring or transferred. Virginia officials include Atty Gen Albertis Harrison and Governor Almond in the case.

Miss Evelyn Drake and Mrs. Howard Kohn arrived in Tucson after their Drake car was demolished in a snow covered mountain highway accident near Tularosa New Mexico Sunday. Neither woman was injured. Mrs. Kohn planned to fly to San Diego to attend her son Ronnie’s Marine recruit graduation activities and would return to Tucson before driving to Hot Springs Arkansas for a stop over.
Soviet sources say East Germany will gain control of West Berlin land air and rail routes to isolate the city. Western officials vow to defend West Berlin and consider options from armored convoy clashes to reviving the airlift if a blockade occurs.
The National Milk Producers Federation favors replacing price support programs with a producer financed and operated dairy stabilization plan. The group backs a food allotment to aid low income families and urges Rural Electrification Administration to be independent. Delegates oppose imitations of dairy foods and any repeal of Taft Hartley Act labor laws.
A Marine F4D Skyray jet overshot an air field and crashed onto railroad tracks at El Toro. A Santa Fe train struck the plane, sending it cartwheeling. 30 passengers in a lounge car escaped injury. Brakeman Pat Schamber and Marine Lt Phillip Schmidt rescued the pilot as flames erupted and three track sections were torn up.
Police Chief Henry S Hefty reminded Monroe residents that dogs are not allowed to run at large year round. Fines run from five to one hundred dollars for violators. Roaming dogs are taken to the animal shelter and returned to owners after a two dollar pound fee and one dollar daily board. A dog is at large if off the owner's premises unless leashed or under control by a person over 12. Dogs may not roam lawns or gardens without owner consent.
The first snow of the season fell in Monroe this afternoon mixed with rain under overcast skies. Forecasters expect clearing this afternoon and a turn to fair and colder conditions tonight with a low around 25 to 33 degrees and a high in the low 50s tomorrow.
Plans to move books maps desks and instructional supplies into the new Monroe high school are set four weeks from tomorrow. Principal Lloyd Nielsen said months of planning have included inventories packing labeling and organizing student volunteers to help with the big relocation.
Basketball fans gather in the Monroe high school auditorium tonight at 6 45 for reserved season tickets. A draw for numbers begins at 7 with about 75 tickets left. Last season holders picked up tickets last Monday. Doors close at 7 when the drawing starts. Fans select seats according to the numbers drawn.
