The Office of Defense Transportation ordered a 25 percent cut in coal burning rail passenger service effective next Sunday to prevent coal stockpiles from dropping below a 30 day supply. Railroads may apply the cuts at their discretion and bans on circus and other nonessential trains remain.
The Green County board approved a $20 monthly cost of living bonus for full time employees with dependents and a $10 bonus for those without. The move covers dependents including wives, children or parents and includes a $25 monthly payment for the purchasing agent role. A separate resolution to reimburse towns for bridge construction costs was withdrawn after an attorney’s opinion found potential illegality.
In a Commons debate R H S Crossman argues Labour drifted toward the American camp under Bevin and Attlee. He warns Britain to avoid a complete Anglo American alliance, noting Anglo American intelligence pooling and potential bloc divisions as Churchill’s Fulton policy lingers.

Mrs. George C. Kowalczyk 35 of Monroe and Fort Wayne, born Marion Ruth Stuart, died after childbirth in an Indiana hospital. She leaves an infant son Robert W and husband George C. Kowalczyk, plus her mother Mrs. Sophia Stuart and father Ray E. Stuart. Funeral services set in Monroe with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
The Supreme Court declined for the second time to reconsider last June's 4-3 ruling rejecting Illinois residents' bid to force a remap of congressional districts. The court had previously refused a reargument after the residents filed anew. Molotov to study UN veto reform proposals from Britain, the U.S., and China with right to reject all.
Senator elect Joseph R. McCarthy mailed his resignation as judge of the 10th judicial circuit to Governor Goodland today and asked that a successor be appointed by December 1.
A cold weekend gave Wisconsin a light snow cover in northern areas. By Monday conditions moderated with highs near 40 and a southwest breeze. States records included 9 above at Land O Lakes and Park Falls, while forecaster Howard J. Thompson warned of another drop in the days ahead.
The Midwest just left a cold spell as the wintry weather shifted east to the coast and into Georgia. A warming trend started in the central plains but forecasters warn of another cold snap in the country’s midsection in a few days. Chicago area forecasters expect decisively colder weather by midweek.
D. E. Willard, longtime assistant county agent and 4-H club leader, has been named agricultural agent of Columbia county. He succeeds O. G. Claflin on January 1. Willard, a navy veteran, began as assistant county agent in Green County in February and will not seek the job in 1947.
George E. Janey, 34, accidentally stepped on a fellow passenger’s foot in a Washington trolley. When he apologized, the man drew a pistol, fired once, and fled. Janey was wounded in the stomach and died several hours later.
James Price of Albany took first in the recent Pick the Winner contest with 14 correct of 16 games, missing only Texas and Iowa. A three-way tie for second included George Sutton Prairie du Chien Mrs Paul Ashby Monroe and Mrs Glen Richards Madison.

He warned that unprecedented corporate profits, seen at a 15 billion dollar after tax rate, threaten free enterprise and that wage struggles will dominate the gathering. He criticized Republican leaders and defended unions against accusations.
Six year old Terry McKnight, son of Richard and Mrs McKnight, is unconscious with a lacerated skull and a broken leg after being struck while crossing the street on his way to South Wayne school. He was dragged briefly when his hand became hooked in a vehicle chain. The driver’s name was not learned, but the license number was recalled by his parents.
Three men were hurt in two weekend crashes reported by Green County highway police. Ray Crane of Argyle Route 1 fractured a ribcage area when his car left the road and hit a culvert end near the county farm gate on highway 81 about 9:20 Saturday night.Early Sunday at 2:05 a.m. William Smiley of Albany drove into a ditch on highway 59 south of Alfred Voegels farm, turning his car onto its top. Smiley suffered cuts and bruises while passenger Harvey Peterson, also of Albany, received bruises.
The Naval Observatory announced a partial solar eclipse will sweep across most of the United States and Canada on Saturday. From Washington, less than half of the sun will be obscured between 9:50 a. m. and 12:55 p. m.
Clinton Zettle a 12 year old helper on his father's farm near Orangeville had his right index finger severed at the first joint when it was caught in a tractor pulley while draining water. He was taken to St. Clare hospital for treatment.
The solid fuels administration announced that homeowners with less than a 10 day coal supply can buy a 10 day allotment from retailers by applying to the retailer who will verify the need. Retailers must show proof their sales are legitimate while consumers need not supply certificates.
President Truman confronts a divided Democratic Party with a Republican majority in Congress. Southern Democrats resist returning to old Roosevelt era goals like anti-poll tax and anti-lynching measures, while New Deal supporters push for a liberal program. Truman plans a state of the union message to set party objectives.
The Justice Department obtained a temporary restraining order from Judge T. Alan Goldsborough to prevent John L. Lewis and the United Mine Workers from breaching the Krug Lewis pact as thousands of miners quit work across multiple states. The order bars termination of the government wage contract and directs continued operation of government seized mines under Executive Order 9728, with a preliminary hearing set for November 27.
