Two Day Deer Season Opens In Green County

Green County begins a two day deer season this weekend from 6 23 a m Saturday to 4 30 p m Sunday with bucks and does allowed using shotgun and slug. Hunters must secure landowner permission and register each deer in the proper county before transport to a designated checking station. Registration stations include Monroe, Brodhead, New Glarus, Darlington, Belmont, Yellowstone, Janesville, Beloit, Edgerton, Evansville, Madison, Stoughton, Mt Horeb and Sun Prairie.

Area Highway Projects In District 1 Priced At 424500 Dollars

State Highway projects in District No 1 for 1962 total an estimated 424 500 dollars. In Lafayette County 8.38 miles of Highway 23 from Darlington to Highway 11 cost 131 700. A 3.8 mile section of Highway 11 from Benton to Shullsburg costs about 89 200. Five miles of Highway 13 from Orfordville to Beloit priced at 150 000. A 0.55 mile stretch of Highway 13 in Orfordville priced at 53 600.

Association Honors Dr Nathan E Bear at Brown Swiss Meeting

Dr Nathan E Bear of Monroe was honored at Beloit by the Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders Association for the senior yearling heifer Welcome In Crystal Diane a National Reserve Bell Ringer. The animal first won Canton show then Wisconsin Bell Ringer Junior Yearling and Western District Bell Ringer Senior Yearling before national selection.

Monroe to Sell 40 Acre Industrial Park to Spur Growth

Monroe officials push industrial expansion by selling parcels of land from the Dobbs tract east of 7th Avenue across from the city incinerator. The 40 acre site is zoned light and heavy industrial with sewer and water ready, tied to an expansion plan for the incinerator and a new street corridor. Bids on about an acre and a half including the house and farm buildings are due by 5 pm December 7, with per acre cost determined after subtracting the purchase price from the sale.

December Draft Reduced to 16,000

The Defense Department announced that 16,000 men would be inducted into Army service next month, a sharp cut from 90,000 in November and 20,000 in October. Half of the quota must report to induction stations by December 8 and the second half by December 15.

Beaten by Robbers in East St Louis Incident

Ralph J. Harris of Lake Geneva Wisconsin an accountant for a Chicago insurance firm was robbed and severely beaten by two men shortly after leaving a night club in East St Louis Illinois. The attack occurred today and Harris was injured in the incident.

Nelson Aide Forfeit Bonds in Traffic Case

Gov Nelson and his press secretary William Fairfield forfeited bonds of ten dollars each after missing Superior Court on traffic charges. The governor was accused of allowing use of a personal car with faulty brakes and Fairfield was involved in driving it. The car was found improperly parked at the bottom of a hill last week.

Pipeline Worker Hurt In Gasoline Fire Near Indian Ford

An unnamed 42 year old natural gas pipeline worker named anlva Davidson from Mexico Mo entered St. Clare Hospital at 11 30 am yesterday after suffering first and second degree burns. He was pouring gasoline along a ditch south of Indian Ford to dry it when fumes rose and ignited.

A major winter storm crippled El Paso and parts of New Mexico and Texas with up to 30 inches of snow in some areas. One man died in New Mexico and five in Texas while air and auto travel were disrupted and schools closed.

Nelson Plan Would Cut Monroe Property Taxes Under State Bill

The State Tax Commission estimates a 4.2 mill, about 12.8 percent reduction in Monroe’s current property tax rate under Gov Nelson’s proposed revision. A $5 000 home would save about $21. Green County as a whole would see about 19.2 percent in home tax relief. The plan funds relief by new excise taxes on nonessential purchases and a withholding system for state income taxes starting next January.

Cheesemakers Ball and Swiss Wrestling Championship Set in Turner Hall

The annual Swiss wrestling championship matches and a Cheesemakers Ball will be held in Turner hall on Saturday December 2. Creamery Operator Cleared in Tax Case

A. Rohde operator of the Stony Ridge Creamery at Manawa was acquitted by a U.S. District Court jury of evading 1685 in income taxes for 1957 and 1958. The seven men five women deliberated two hours before the verdict. The government said Rohde did not pay taxes on cash cream sales. Rohde's lawyer said the money belonged to former cooperative members.

Wrong Victim Slaying Puzzles Northlake Politician Rivalry

In Northlake Illinois a 40 year old draftsman Fred Erdman Jr was shot as he entered the home of Ralph Sievert 36 a local political figure. Police say two professional gunmen fired from a bush with three .45 caliber slugs entering a storm door and lodging in a door. Sievert says the bullets were aimed at him and he is leaving politics. Northlake officials dispute Sievert claims and note local politics are not involved in the homicide.

Vocational Guidance Talk At Monroe Rotary Club

Leo Sebald, guidance counselor at Monroe High School, spoke on the history methods and possibilities of vocational guidance at the Monroe Rotary Club meeting yesterday in the Swiss Wheel. After lunch the club scholarship committee discussed plans to provide a scholarship for a deserving senior at Monroe High School to aid in career development. The committee includes John H.
