A boiler explosion at a consolidated school killed 13 year old Walter Ruppel and injured 11 others, with Alice Johns among the critically hurt. The blast hit during a changed schedule when most pupils remained in undamaged sections of the two story building. The blast occurred at 10 40 a m as seventh grade pupils were in classrooms and basement areas.
