Americans honor war dead as protests flank Nixon Vietnam policy amid claims of a great silent majority. In Saigon, Viet forces report heavy losses with 15 allied dead and 75 wounded in Bu Dop area as helicopters fall. Senate panel signals draft reform tied to the President’s lottery plan.
The attorney general reports two more of 13 men named in warrants tied to a Richland County drug operation have been captured. Nine Wisconsin men were arrested on state narcotic conspiracy charges. Warrants seek four others. two were taken in Kansas and Missouri. A raid on a Richland Center farmhouse found a drug lab supplying Illinois Wisconsin and Kansas.
AP reports widespread turkey mite troubles for growers and damage from blasts in Manhattan through RCA Building, GM Building, and Chase Manhattan Building. In Cincinnati a 14 year old Norwood High freshman faces juvenile court after an attempted airliner hijack, FBI handed him to Hamilton County authorities.
A federal judge in Washington invalidated a District of Columbia law banning abortions by doctors and urged a rapid appeal to the Supreme Court. If the high court upholds the ruling, century old abortion prohibitions could fall in many states.
An AP report says a Roman Catholic group of priests quotes members as growing angry and discouraged and calls for a National Pastoral Council where laymen and parish clergy have equal status with bishops and archbishops.
Ralph Daum, president of UAW Local 72 in Kenosha, said workers will vote Wednesday on the latest contract offer from American Motors Corp. The local executive board recommended unanimously that workers reject the proposal.
The Pabst Theater in Milwaukee cancels this season’s stage schedule after surviving prior fires and financial strain. Ticket holders will receive refunds.
The Evening Times lists 42 addresses under Operation Mail Call initiated by Monroe teacher Miss Marilyn Kubly and Bill Hawthorne to boost Christmas mail to overseas troops. Addresses published, with additional listings possible by Nov. 15 and Nov. 17, plus cards and letters postmarked by Dec. 13 to reach troops before Christmas.
Karen Hanson and Kelly Hunt of South School five grade share memories and feelings about relatives who served in Vietnam. He notes public misperceptions about Vietnam, explains SEATO commitments, and reflects on Oriental cultures, democracy, and the contrast with American relief life. His 28 decorations, earned across two dozen foreign postings, are displayed at Clark's Shoe Store for Veterans Day 1969.
State and local highway officials plan an informal display November 12 in Brodhead from 5 to 9 p.m. and an official hearing November 13 at 10 a.m. to discuss about 10.3 miles of Highway 81 from Green County to Rock County including Sugar River relocation. Written testimony accepted until November 23.
