Armistice Eve Echoes Through Albany in 1918 Revelry
At 4 a.m. on November 11 Albany learned armistice took effect at 11 a.m. 1918. The town flooded with bells and gunfire, a Kaiser effigy hung, a mammoth parade formed, and crowds filled the Opera House for a patriotic program. Germans were escorted and made to salute the flag. The city had led Green County in war efforts with Red Cross teams and high enlistment, and town meetings kept up the momentum through 1917 18.

Gas installation bid accepted for Monroe County Courthouse
The Monroe Board of Supervisors approved a $2,614,906 1967 budget and heard questions from press and supervisors. North Central Public Service will bore under the courthouse square to lay a gas line, with R Mueller Cheese Factory Equipment Co. submitting the low bid of 2350 for the gas conversion unit. The project follows a prior permit from the Monroe Board of Public Works to bore under the street for natural gas, with no street tearing permission. The levy rises to 1,428,698 due to $200,000 in general funds used last year to cut taxes. The next session is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday in the Courthouse.

Monroe City Budget Proposes 11 Cent Tax Increase
The Monroe City Council reviewed a proposed budget of 796 205.90 and announced an 11 cent rise in the city tax rate to 6.15 per 1000, up from 6.04 in 1966. The levy to be raised totals 220 593.57, about 13 000 higher than last year, with public hearing planned for December.
