Fire destroys Swiss Colony Inn in Monroe blaze

A two story frame building housing the Swiss Colony Inn and cheese shop burned from 6:30 am as grease in the kitchen ignited. Firefighters from Monroe and surrounding towns fought the 2.5 hour blaze, evacuating six residents and protecting adjacent businesses. No serious injuries reported.

Paulson Celebrates Birthday as Twins Arrive at St. Clare

Mrs Clinton Paulson presented her husband Paulson with a birthday surprise when twins were born yesterday at St. Clare Hospital. The first boy weighed seven pounds ten ounces and arrived at 3 14 PM, followed by a seven pound four ounce son at 3 28 PM. They have three sisters Pammie Connie and Vickie and a brother Randy. The mother is Mary McAuliffe Gratiot daughter of Francis McAuliffe. Grandparents are James Paulson and Regena Harvey and Minnie McAuliffe.

County Budget Action Planned At Friday Session

Finance committee eyed finalizing the proposal and a plan to assist Monroe Municipal Airport. 1966 property tax levy set at 1,319,098.69 up from 1,205,637.11. General fund projected around 330,000 with transfers expected to reduce levy. Deputy sheriff humane officer recommended. 3500 added for stand by generator for sheriff and Ag Building. Soil and water outlay raised to 2,200. Highway workers gain 10 cents hourly, monthly staff one step, road foremen 1.16 per hour. Page continues.

Dearth Motors Thrives After Palm Sunday Tornado Open House

Monroe firm Dearth Motors marks a grand open house at its expanded Highway 11 West site after the Palm Sunday tornado. The rebuilt complex includes a 170 by 60 foot showroom and a large 86 by 40 foot parts building, plus an adjoining covered carport area and a rebuilt structure from Durfee Roofing Co. The Dearth family press says they will keep growing with Monroe as they expand operations and attract new business to the storm-ravaged west side.

Moose Lodge to observe 50th anniversary with gala weekend

Monroe Moose Lodge marks its 50th anniversary with a weekend program featuring guest speaker Jay Stoehr assistant director of the Membership Enrollment Department of the Loyal Order of Moose. A Saturday dance at Moose Hall will include the New Glarus Troubadors and prizes. Sunday enrollment ceremonies begin at 2 p.m. with a smorgasbord from 5 to 9 p.m. The event notes the lodge’s long history since 1915 and its various meeting sites and renovations.
