Rate Reduction Seen Aldermen Adopt $555,345 Budget
Aldermen approved a 1962 budget of 555,345.98, aiming to cut the city tax rate to 5 per thousand from 5.50. In the Houston Ship Channel near Galveston Bay two ships, the M S Berean Norwegian tanker and the Union Reliance Nationalist Chinese freighter, collided and caught fire. Three Union Reliance crewmen died and seven were missing. about 98 people were aboard. The Berean burned five hours then sailed to Bolivar Roads. The Union Reliance was largely destroyed. the blaze involved solvents and animal fats with oil barrels on deck.
