The Associated Press reports 33 traffic deaths early today as thousands hit the roads for Memorial Day weekend, the first warm weather holiday of the year. Weather varied nationwide with fair skies in the midcontinent and thunderstorms in the South Texas and the Far West.

President Nixon will hold a no question barred news conference on live radio and television next Tuesday evening, the White House says. Press Secretary Ronald L. Ziegler said Wednesday Nixon had no advance announcements to make.

Ex-NYPD officer hijacking attempt ends in capture in Nassau

James Bennett 39 of Commack New York tried to flee a hijacked jet with $500000 and three hostages. He claimed to be wrapped in explosives but was overpowered by Nassau and U S officials at the Nassau airport. No explosives were found and he was jailed as jurisdiction was decided.

Police Find Club and Machete Linked to Mass Murder Case

In Yuba City California investigators found a wooden club with possible bloodstains and an 18 inch machete at the home of Juan V Corona, the farm labor contractor charged in the killings of 21 itinerant workers. The affidavit notes other weapons and gravesites as rains slow the search.

Blaze destroys dairy barn at Friedly farm in Decatur Township

Fire reported at 12 46 p m at Fritz Friedly dairy in Decatur Township destroyed an 82 by 34 foot barn. Two cows and four calves perished. Cause under investigation with initial report noting fire began mid building. Fire departments from Brodhead and Albany aided. cows milking moved to Burt Estate Farm. One barn section over 100 years old.

Madison teen builds timer measuring to one hundred thousandth

Lorentz Preysz a 16 year old junior at Madison East developed a hand built timer capable of timing intervals to one 100000th of a second. The two channel prototype can run simultaneously and be started or stopped manually or electronically. Preysz spent about four hours weekly for a year to create the device inspired by skiing on Mt Telemark where he saw a similar timer.

Bike Riders Travel 1966 Miles For Wisconsin Benefit

Cyclists in the Green County Bike Ride rode 1 966 miles on May 22 to aid the mentally retarded of Wisconsin. Thirty five riders and four riders covered 34 and 50 mile legs respectively, with participants from Monroe New Glarus and surrounding towns. Collect sponsor money by June 5 to New Concept Foundation via listed coordinators and treasurer.

Charges Lodged Against Motorist in Darlington Man's Death

Smith Baker Peck of Freeport Illinois was charged in Green County Court with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle after a Sunday May 23 two car crash 5.5 miles south of Monroe on highway 69 that killed Bernard McDermott a 24 year old Darlington resident. Peck age 36 pleads not guilty bond set at $1000 case held over to June 4 Linda McDermott 20 wife of the deceased was in critical condition then hospitalized and later released with improving status.

Tragic Wuppertal Train Collision Kills Many

A head on crash between a two coach passenger train and a freight near Oberbarmen and Radevormwald in Wuppertal Germany leaves forty schoolchildren and five adults dead with at least 24 others seriously injured. The freight engineer says he received a go ahead signal that the station master denies issuing.

Woman Drowns in River Canoe Mishap

Mrs. Louise Bardles aged 61 from Fox Point drowned when a canoe on the Peshtigo River overturned in Marinette County. Her sister Lenore Zinn of Hartford pulled her to shore but she could not be revived, sheriff reports said.

New Glarus Legion Honors WWI Dead in Belgium Cemetery

The Stuessy-Kuenzi American Legion Post in New Glarus will again honor U S WWI dead buried at Flanders Field American Military Cemetery in Waregem Belgium. A bouquet will be placed in the Chapel by American Battle Monuments Commission staff for the 368 interred, representing fewer than 400 never returning home.
