Farmer Gifts to Charity Taxable Beyond 15 Percent Rule
Internal Revenue officials clarified that gifts of farm products to charity are taxed if the market value exceeds 15 percent of the donor’s income. The bureau adds the gift value to income, then allows a deduction up to 15 percent of total income. A cited case involves David C. White challenging an $8,950 tax on wheat donated to the Friendship Train, with 7,226 bushels valued at $2.65 each, totaling $19,150.67 added income before the deduction.

Farm tenancy declines as more farmers buy land
A study by B T Inman of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics shows tenancy dropping nationwide with only 26.9 percent of farms tenant operated last year, down from 31.7 percent in 1945 and 42.4 percent in 1930. Land under lease fell from 39.4 percent to 38.9 percent from 1945 to 1947. Many former tenants did not return to farming postwar as other work and technical gains reduce labor needs. meanwhile families with nonfarm income buy small acreages counted as farms. Thirty six of Idaho's 44 counties have commercially important minerals.
