Gala Opening for JFK Center

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington opens to the public tonight for a gala preview to fund a special education program. The marble building plans public performances starting in September and tonight’s event runs until 2 a.m. Friday with 3,500 tickets sold at 100 dollars each or 40 dollars for under 35. Proceeds support low-cost tickets for youth seniors and the poor.

Wisconsin Seeks Nine District Map in Reapportionment Bill

The Wisconsin Senate sent a second congressional reapportionment bill to reduce districts from ten to nine. The plan by Sen Milo Knutson would exclude Eau Claire County from the 3rd district and move Juneau to the 2nd, while adding St Croix Polk and Dunn Counties to Rep. Vernon Thomson’s western area. An earlier proposal by Rep William Steiger faced opposition over altering the 3rd district’s Republican balance.

Mass murder charge tied to 12 found in California orchards

Juan V. Corona, a 37 year old farm labor contractor in Yuba City, faces 10 counts of murder as authorities probe a mass killing spree yielding 12 victims buried in peach and prune orchards. Police describe back of head wounds with machete or heavy knife, with some chest and facial injuries.

Car Overturns. two youths hurt in Monroe and dog killed

Reported at 4 33 p m the sheriff s department said Craig Segner 19 and Christine Vincent 17 sustained minor injuries after Segner s westbound vehicle on Highway 11 rolled over five miles west of Segner s route. Both drivers suffered abrasions and Segner s car was a total loss. A Golden Retriever owned by Delos Del Barrett was killed when struck by Sheryl L Whitehead 22 on Highway 59. Whitehead s car sustained damage to headlamps grill radiator bumper and splash pan. Michael T Mattison Beloit reported a left shoulder injury after blacking out from gas fumes in a one car crash 4 5 miles northwest of Brodhead on CTSS reporting at 2 21 am Thursday.

Administration Wins Two Year Draft Vote

The Nixon administration secured Senate approval for a two year draft extension by a 42 to 31 vote. Senator Richard Schweiker of Pennsylvania advocated a one year limit noting that higher pay could boost volunteers and hasten the end of the draft.

Identical Twins Born at St Clare Hospital

Identical twin girls arrived Wednesday afternoon May 26 at St. Clare Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. James R. Baumann 613 11th St. They weighed four pounds one ounce each and measured 17 inches. The siblings include one brother, John David, six, and the parents, former Margaret Pearson. Grandparents include Alfred and Mae Pearson of Burlington Wisconsin and William Baumann of Floodwood Minnesota. Both babies are healthy and unnamed yet.

Monroe High School awards 1971 scholarships to graduates

Monroe High School and the school board announced the 1971 scholarship winners with new awards included the Neushwander Band Scholarship worth about 250 dollars for band musicianship and community service and the Adele Weckerly Scholarship of 220 dollars for higher education. Recipients include James Bahler first Neushwander recipient and James Allen first Adele Weckerly recipient along with multiple other students receiving 100 to 1,000 dollar awards for college study at various institutions.
