Captain Oscar F. Pinney, a renowned local Civil War figure and namesake of the Monroe Grand Army post, died from wounds suffered at Stone River on February 17, 1863. The Fifth Battery recruited heavily from Green County, fought in Farmington and Stones River, and Pinney was mortally wounded at Murfreesboro.

The Army plans to convert its 14 divisions into modular brigades capable of rapid reorganization for Europe or Southeast Asia. Surfacing Starts For Highway 69
Application of hot mix paving on the two mile relocation of Highway 69 south of Monroe has started. Rein Schultz and Dahl Inc Madison contractor have its hot mix plant in operation at the Altman pit east of Monroe. A hot mix surface will then be applied from the end of the relocation over the concrete to the Wisconsin Illinois State Line. This will give a new surface the entire distance around five miles. A number of private driveways in the city are being black topped at the individual property owners expense during the operation of the plant.
