A Milwaukee GOP gathering endorsed moderate candidates for local races while backing Barry Goldwater for president in a brief 12 minute closing session. A protester from Madison sat on the floor as Goldwater supporters spilled out after a telegram pledge from the Arizona senator. The convention pledged all 30 Wisconsin votes to Rep John W Byrnes on the first roll call, with Wilbur Renk as the Senate candidate. Firemen Extinguish Nursing Home Blaze
Firemen were called to the White Haven nursing home at 6 35 a m yesterday to extinguish a mattress fire. The chief said the fire was quickly out but there was considerable smoke. Firemen remained about 45 minutes with fans to clear the room of smoke.

Walter Day Monroe barber dies at 71
Walter L Day a Monroe barber of 51 years died at 4 am in his home of an apparent heart attack. Born Aug 7 1893, he operated a three chair shop on Monroe south side. He married Ethel Martin in 1913, celebrated a golden anniversary last fall, and served as secretary of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce 1940 50. Surviving wife son Wendell in Muscatine and two brothers. Funeral arrangements pending at Shriner Neushwander funeral home.

Monroe Junior Champ Meet Qualifiers For State July 18
Thirty three local youngsters qualified for the Junior Champ state meet to be held at West Allis on Saturday July 18 by winning events at Monroe High School athletic field. Diane Milestone was the sole triple winner, taking broad jump 50 yard and 75 yard dashes. Multiple winners included Kevin Burington Steve Goodman Terry Hayes Mike Meythaler Vonnie Roosli Steve Christian Linda Ott and others across age groups with events listed for broad jump high jump pole vault shot put baseball throw softball throw and various dashes and hurdles. More than 300 entered the Jaycees sponsored meet under Stan Barr’s leadership.

Lawrence Lewis Funeral Tuesday in Brillion
Lawrence Lewis Sr. 75 of Brillion died Saturday and funeral services are set for 8 p.m. tomorrow at the Wieting Funeral Home Brillion with Rev. Willard Albertus officiating and Masonic rites.
