Judging Contest Held in Monroe
Area youths competed in the County 4H and FFA judging contest at the Monroe Fair grounds. Dairy judging occurred at Oliver Miller and Sugar Valley farms while livestock events happened at the fairgrounds. About 150 youths entered dairy, 530 in livestock, and 50 in the afternoon tractor driving contest.

R R Bartelt 62 dies after illness at St Clare Hospital
Raymond R. Bartelt age 62 of Route 1 Browntown died yesterday in St. Clare Hospital after a three year illness. He was born December 25 1903 in Basswood near Winslow. He farmed in Cadiz Township and belonged to Stavers EUB Church Smith Masonic Lodge Monroe Order of the Eastern Star Monroe Eagles Club and was secretary treasurer of Whitehead Cheese Company. He is survived by his wife two daughters two brothers a sister and three grandchildren. Services will be conducted tomorrow at 1 30 p m at Newcomer Funeral Home Monroe with burial in Stavers Cemetery. A prayer service will be held tonight.

Open House Week Highlights Arts and Air Events

Burned Out Motor Sparks Firemen Call
Firefighters were summoned to Larry Lindgren’s home at 2002 16th St last night when smoke from a burned out furnace motor filled the house. Archie Gibbons a nearby furnace specialist removed the motor before the crew arrived and fans were used to vent the smoke. No damage occurred.

The 1966 Wisconsin traffic toll rose to 306 over the balmy weekend with thirteen deaths on crowded highways. Harbick Accepts NMU Post After Montgomery Ward Service
Richard Harbick, longtime manager of the Montgomery Ward store in Monroe, has accepted a job as business administrator at Northern Michigan University in Marquette. He will start June 13, leave Monroe June 5, and relocate with his two sons Tim and Mark after housing becomes available. Harbick, a 1957 NMU graduate, notes the college’s population about 6,500 and its growth pains as he returns to his alma mater.

Sophia Blumer 85 formerly of Monroe died at St. Clare Hospital after an illness. Born July 13 1880 in Lombach Württemberg Germany she moved to Monroe with her parents at age three. She married Jacob C Blumer in 1907 and survived by nieces and nephews. Funeral services set for 1 30 p.m. Wednesday at Shrier Neushwander Funeral Home with Rev Milton Petzold officiating. Burial Greenwood Cemetery. She had lived at Hilltop Haven Nursing Home in South Wayne.
