Rhinelander Drops Probe of Police Car Garbage Hauling Case

The Fire and Police Commission in Rhinelander said it was convinced officers in the police department were covering for each other but dropped four formal complaints. Police Chief Jacob Miller was told he would be held solely responsible for the conduct of his men. A patrolman faced allegations of using a squad car to haul garbage for a pig farm he owned. Miller said the investigation could not substantiate the charge.

Storm Brings Rain and Electrical Damage in Wisconsin

Monroe and Green County received about an inch of rain after a half inch prior. An electrical storm and hail caused some utility damage with temporary outages and a burned wire in Blanchardville. Robert Boettcher 25 of Baileys Harbor died when his car failed to negotiate a curve on Highway 42 in Ephraim and crashed into a stone pillar. He was alone in the vehicle and killed instantly.

Veteran Pension Increase Signed by President Truman

President Truman signed two bills increasing veterans pensions. The package raises service connected disability compensation by 15 percent for 50 percent or more disabled and 5 percent for 10 to 49 percent, with a 15 percent rise for widows with children when deaths were service connected. Non service connected pensions gain 3 dollars monthly, and certain widows’ and dependents’ allowances rise. A second bill lifts income limits for non service connected cases from 1000/2500 to 1400/2700, costing about 43.8 million dollars next year.

Death of Paul Davis Draft Aide in Wisconsin

Paul P. Davis 54 Beloit coordinator for the Wisconsin selective service organization died suddenly of a heart attack in Lancaster after a Monroe business trip. He served as clerk of Beloit’s first selective service board, later state coordinator, and was veteran of World War I. He leaves a widow, a daughter Mrs Clifford Cowen and three grandchildren in Oshkosh. Services were held in Beloit with military burial at Oakwood cemetery.

House Votes to Trim Western Europe Aid by 615 Million
