The Wisconsin Business Research Council reports the state sits between good and bad progress in attracting new industry. Population growth lags national rates, prompting concern over jobs and outmigration of youth. Wisconsin’s heavier manufacturing ties to income, plus regional competition from the South and West, shapes its prospects.
Far rington Daniels of the University of Wisconsin was elected Monday to the policy advisory board for Argonne National Laboratory. The board will work with Dr. Lawrence Kimpton chancellor of the University of Chicago, the contract operator of the nuclear physics lab for the Atomic Energy Commission.
Wisconsin players Bob Kivlin of Lake Delton and Brian Charter of Janesville earned spots in the PGA Championship to be staged July 17 to 21 in Dayton. Kivlin posted 149 over 36 holes while Charter advanced after a six hole playoff with host Ridgway club pro Bob Belew following a 151 tie.
Gov. Thomson used his veto power to block two bills taxing or assessing real estate the state acquired through foreclosures of mortgages held by the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs. He cited protecting trust funds for veterans education medical care and housing and noted 17 551 loans and 155 properties in 40 counties with a total exempt tax amount of 7 506 10.
The stock market retreated from recent 1957 highs as prices eased in mid afternoon trading. Several pivotal issues fell slightly while many key stocks held firm or advanced, with analysts predicting a short resting period after a wave of gains.
President Eisenhower submitted a trimmed-down 3.865 billion dollar foreign aid program and urged Congress that tax cuts hinge on winning peace. Benny Hooper Jr a 7 year old boy from Manorville emerges from an oxygen tent in Bayview General hospital Mas tic Beach where doctors report he is in very good condition. He had a 24 foot backyard pit fall last Thursday evening and was rescued the next night. He shows minor lung inflammation and bronchial as well as sinus inflammation but is improving.
Wisconsin dairy traders report a steady cheese market in Madison as demand remains light to fair and supply runs ample. Prices for cheddar and Longhorns range around 34 to 36 cents, singles around 37 to 37.5 cents, and midgets about 37 to 39 cents per pound.
The House appropriations committee voted a 2.59 billion dollar cut in new Defense Department funds while recommending 33.54 billion for Army Navy and Air Force for the new fiscal year. President Eisenhower had requested 36.13 billion. current year appropriations stood at 34.70 billion. The panel labeled 1.296 billion of the cut "phony" and warned some reductions may be restored next year. If approved, total 1958 requests would fall by about 4 billion from 55 billion.
MADISON The Joint Finance Committee recommended indefinite postponement of a bill for across the board state employee pay raises. The panel also urged killing several related measures including merit pay formulas overtime cashing rules hospital insurance premium subsidies and sick leave accrual increases. The Assembly approved Wisconsin residency requirement for public aid and dependent children payments. It also backed a bill allowing 25 percent disabled individuals to receive a special peddler license and preliminarily approved riders for scooter operation on highways. The judiciary committee urged killing Democratic policy bills mandating income tax openness and open meetings.
A bolt hit Jefferson High School at 5 a.m. tearing apart the main chimney and blowing out windows and frames on the west side of the three story brick building. The storm also damaged the roof and heating system, forcing a holiday for students.
Edward Johnson a senior and Georgia Weeden a ninth grader were named first place winners in the high school Poppy Day poster contest held with the American Legion Auxiliary. Senior Barbara Kessler and Janis Babler won second and third. junior Kay Drye and Kay Chambers won second and third.
In Port au Prince Brig. Gen. Leon Cantave, army chief of staff, proclaims military rule to ensure free and honest elections. He defies an executive council order ousting him as Haiti’s civilian leaders had ruled by decree pending presidential elections set for June 16.
In Lykens Pennsylvania the body of 34 year old coal miner David Snyder was recovered after 82 hours of digging and praying. Snyder, father of three, was buried 400 feet underground Friday in a mine owned by himself, his brother LeRoy, and Mark Sponk. He died of suffocation, according to Deputy Coroner Dr. Samuel E. Herrold.
Weather warnings prompted local law enforcement and Civil Defense to establish an alert system. A long siren blast will warn residents if a tornado nears, with Skywatch observers on one hour shifts. Alerts issued from 3 33 a m east of Moline to Argyle and Monroe regions, with forecasts of mostly cloudy skies and possible thunderstorms tomorrow.
Desks and equipment were moved from the old St. Victor parochial school to the new facility at 20th avenue and 15th street. Classes ended early while the old structure is razed to make room for a gym. The eight classroom school will serve 360 students with two levels of four rooms each.
The United States paroled one Japanese war criminal and Australia pardoned three others serving life terms at Sugamo Prison in Tokyo. The releases reduce the number of prisoners at Sugamo to 82.
Paris marked 30 years since Charles A. Lindbergh's solo 3,600 mile flight from New York to Le Bourget. Crowds flooded streets and landmarks as officials announced his arrival and departure times while he joked with reporters about the lone travel "ship" that carried him.
Sen Wiley urges a special election to fill Wisconsin's late McCarthy seat. He supports an emergency filling law but says now is not the time to change it, noting continuous representation during potential atomic attack.
A destructive tornado carved an 80 mile path through Kansas and Missouri near Kansas City at dusk. Rescue teams counted 37 dead and more than 200 hospitalized as towns including Ruskin Heights Hickman Mills Ottawa Spring Hill Martin City and Lees Summit suffered heavy losses. Governor Blair ordered martial law and the Missouri National Guard aided rescue and relief efforts.
Two year old Mary Therese Rieder, daughter of Mr and Mrs William R Rieder Jr of 623 26th avenue, was bitten about the eyes nose and mouth when she wandered into a neighbor's yard and was attacked by a dog tied in a garage. She was treated at the Monroe Clinic and released. The dog owned by Mrs May W Gustafson of 616 26th avenue was ordered impounded for a week.
Suzanne Saalsan of Argyle and her partner Joe Lombardo, a Brooklyn barber, will seek $20 000 tonight on CBS TV at 6 30. They hit the $15 000 mark on the Golden Medal Marathon last Tuesday. Her parents, Mr and Mrs A N Saalsaa, plan to attend the show.
