Congressmen from Wisconsin and Ohio sampled 283 pounds of cheese in the House and Senate restaurants. Leaders from both parties praised the cheeses as excellent while noting no clear winner, with Swiss wheels from Green County and Tuscarawas County on display and heart shaped specimens sent to President Truman and party leaders.

County Tuberculin Tests Nearing Completion in Green County

Green county tuberculin testing, led by Dr H J O Connell, shows 107 reactors among 57 infected herds from 1 814 tested herds totaling 64 972 cattle. Remaining work focuses on Clarno Cadiz townships and Jefferson town, with fall pasture tests and potential indemnity forfeiture for noncompliance. Wisconsin Green County staged a Swiss cheese day in the Capitol building drawing Congress and aides for a 36 hour spree. Local contractor Henry Freitag killed by Milwaukee road train

Henry T Freitag of New Glarus, about 60, was fatally struck near Kirby Milling Co. while the locomotive switched. Deputy coroner Wilbur Deininger investigated. Freitag, a cement worker who built the Klassy Milling Co. plant, left a widow and three daughters. body held at Zentner funeral home.

Brodhead Men Hurt In Highway 11 Crash

A late night crash on Highway 11 near Purmaner Ville left three passengers injured. Driver Sheldon E. Brown, 18, of Brodhead, rolled the car after it upset near a pole. Bernard Smith suffered a cut below the eye, and another rider had a leg cut. Stanley Douglas and Brown were uninjured. The car was a total wreck.

Public square now illuminated by 28 modern fixtures delivering uniform light. Twenty fixtures on the square’s exterior and eight on the courthouse side spell even coverage with down shine and high reflectors shielding upper floors. Liberated Sergeant Reunites With Family After 18 Months

Navy sergeant Elmer C. Bender of Cincinnati, held by Chinese communists for 18 months, returned to a private reunion with his wife Shirley and daughter Kathy after his release. The welcome unfolded at a naval air base as Bender and fellow prisoner William C. Smith of Long Beach, California, were captured when their observation plane was forced down near Tsingtao in October 1948.

Browntown youth injured in Browntown Bay Hurton crash

A Browntown youth, 14, was injured when a car struck him and another boy while walking home from a fishing trip along old highway 11 near Browntown. The driver, McGonigal, received 15 days in Green County Jail and was charged with restricted license, improper lights, one headlight and unregistered vehicle.

Strike Called Off By Switch Union

The Switch Men's Union will begin wage hour talks with 10 western railroads on Tuesday instead of striking. The walkout was postponed to June 1 by president Arthur J. Glover after the Railway Mediation Board agreed to start peace talks next week. About 6,000 switchmen in yard service west of Chicago are affected. The union seeks 48 hours pay for a 40 hour week.

Munitions Blast Rocks South Amboy and Perth Amboy

A 600 ton ammunition explosion ripped South Amboy New Jersey causing extensive damage and injuries. Up to 26 dead and 312 injured were reported with many windows shattered in Perth Amboy across the Raritan River. Officials blamed a commercial shipment and the scene drew rescue squads from the New York area.
