Auditor probes UW athletic funds after inadequate records
State Auditor J. Jay Kelcher told Governor Rennebohm the University of Wisconsin student athletic activities fund has inadequate and unsatisfactory records. He suggested the legislature seek the attorney general’s study to determine illegal or improper expenditures. The fund, active since 1932, covers non tax program sales and refreshments at athletic events. University President Fred said the fund is open to public, not state tax money, and steps have been taken to prevent repetition of past conditions. The fund’s receipts for the year ended July 1, 1948 totaled 38,124.10 with expenditures of 18,209.48 and other disbursements of 20,044.76. Total intercollegiate receipts reached 737,597.93 with 590,896.63 in expenditures and a year end balance of 146,701.30, plus reserves, yielding 401,171.81 cash in the athletic fund. In 1947 the university distributed 7,396 complimentary football tickets, including 1,388 to the press and 1,268 to legislators.
