Queen Contest Voting Beginning May 24 in Green County

Green County Ag Chest meets to organize Dairy Queen contest with nine communities voting from May 24. Each 20 cent dairy purchase earns a vote, nine area finalists lead to a Belleville final on June 24 with three judges selecting the county queen.

Dairy Bread Contest Slated for Green County

The 1965 June Dairy Month Recipe Contest invites Green County residents to submit bread recipes using at least two dairy products. Four weekly winners advance to a county bake off, with cash prizes and a telecast Bake-Off in October. Contest details and judging criteria are listed by the Green County Extension Office.

Jaycee Chicken Barbecue Set for May 30 at Green County Fairgrounds

Jack Kessenich, chairman, said preparations are under way and chairmen are named for the annual Jaycee chicken barbecue. The event will be held Sunday May 30 at the Green County Fairgrounds with tickets available from any Jaycee or Swenson's Barber shop Ferron's First National Bank and Commercial and Savings Bank.

Firemen Parade Marks 50th Anniversary Event in Freeport

The Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois Firemen's Association holds a two day celebration on May 22 and 23 with 119 parade units from 84 Wisconsin and 52 Illinois departments. Monroe will display a 1928 reserve pumper and a 1912 antique. other towns provide vintage engines, a hose cart, and a Yodelers group. Banquet speakers include Emmet Cox and William Clark. parade route starts at Spring and Liberty and proceeds eight blocks.

Blackbourn Chooses Wisconsin Football Scholarship

Monroe High School athlete Gary Blackbourn announced acceptance of a football scholarship to the University of Wisconsin. He joins basketball grant recipients Tom Mitchell and Keith Burington. Blackbourn will study Physical Therapy at UW and praised its medical department.

National Guard Takes Command Of Civil Defense Support

Wisconsin National Guard to direct all Army Navy Air Force and Marine Corps active and reserve forces assigned to state Civil Defense in a nuclear attack. Maj. Gen. Ralph J. Olson announced the plan approved by Secretary McNamara with Maj. John L. Downing Jr. named chief of the new Civil Defense support. Downing, a Madison resident, has a long record including World War II Korea Berlin crisis and various Wisconsin Guard posts. The State Headquarters will report to the Fifth U.S. Army in Chicago and provide Civil Defense support as needed.

Husband handcuffs himself to wife at birth

Mary Jane Higgins 25 and her newborn daughter were fine after birth at Oklahoma Osteopathic Hospital in Tulsa. Curtis Higgins 25 handcuffed himself to his wife to protest being barred from the delivery, and police were called but no charges filed as no law was violated.

Bankers Event Set for May 25 in Monroe Club

Harris Helmer of Madison will speak at the Green County Bankers Association annual meeting to be held Tuesday May 25 at 6 30 p m Monroe Country Club. The agenda includes afternoon golf, evening prizes, and officer elections. Open to bank employees and spouses. Knowles Calls $100 Million Bond Plan At Wisconsin Congress

Gov Warren Knowles urged 360 delegates from 72 counties to back a $100 million outdoor recreation bond program to speed land purchase and development for fishing hunting parks and forests. He praised the 50 million 1961 program and pressed for making the program permanent.
