Rain and cold weather did not dampen hundreds of prom goers at Monroe High School gym for the annual event. Queen Beatrice Brandli was crowned by King Kirk West as Jack Sweeney Orchestra played Penthouse Serenade from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The grand march drew spectators in the south bleachers while junior and senior officers served as court. Texan serious cases Three Had Family Troubles
In Houston a tavern operator described as having family troubles used a loaded .22 caliber public safety item to strike three women and injure a man before police captured him. Tommie Heads Jr., 36, fatally wounded his wife Florence 30 and two others, Emily Jacquette 70 and Priscilla Babin 40. He wounded Jacquette's husband Taylor 77. All involved were Black. Heads was arrested on a street corner while headed toward his mother’s home, still carrying the loaded weapon.
