AP News In Brief reports Kalo Paeschke, age seven, traveled 20 miles over the weekend to aid hunger relief. She earned $1.40 per mile, and older youths carried her an extra 10 miles. Across Wisconsin, volunteers finished fund-raising events, with some teens returning later to collect litter along a 30 mile Milwaukee route.
Florida psychiatrist Dr. Paul L. Adams warned that violence is learned through parental beatings neglect and adult influence. California's Dr. Bryant Wege proposed mass psychotherapy for nations and groups to address conflict such as the Egypt Israel border dispute.
Cape Kennedy Florida AP reports preparations for Mariner 9 to launch toward Mars on May 18 amid an investigation into Mariner 8's failure. Delays could push the launch to June 17. Mars will not be favorably positioned again until 1973. The first half of the $153.6 million project to send two satellites ended with the Atlas-Centaur rocket failing shortly after liftoff, the second stage tumbling into the Atlantic with its payload.
New York AP reports Tax Freedom Day marking May 10, 1971 as the first day the average American works for himself. The U S Chamber of Commerce says until today all earnings funded federal state and local taxes with the typical taxpayer averaging 2 hours 51 minutes per 8 hour day to cover tax bills.
A Monday morning blaze gutted the Davis Cheese Co. factory near Browntown in Cadiz Township. Loss includes much of John Marty’s household items. cause not determined. Fire Chief Nathan Garwell reported the fire at 10:30 a.m. with Browntown and Monroe mutual aid responding. tanker support provided. The plant, near Highway 11, produced Swiss cheese.
On Thursday May 6, five Monroe area residents joined 16 others in a naturalization ceremony presided by Judge Arthur Luebke in Janesville. The new citizens from Green County include Dr. Egbert Kamstra and his wife with son Peter, Theodore Sager and his wife, and Mrs. Ernest Jaggi. Citizens represented 15 countries, and preparation included classes at Blackhawk Vocational School led by Mrs. Wayne Stroessner.
Dr. Barbara Thompson an educational consultant with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction spoke to about 110 Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority members at the 1971 State Convention in Monroe. The event hosted by Monroe Chapter Omicron featured Swiss heritage themes, a noon luncheon, and performances by Martha Bernet and Margie Rast.
The Civil Rights Commission reports little progress and some regression since its October review. It cites poor coordination across 40 agencies, waning housing enforcement, and scarce use of sanctions despite nearly doubling civil rights funding. The report praises the Justice Department’s housing section for aggressive duties.
The White House accepts the commission’s key recommendation to form a permanent Civil Rights Committee within the White House Council on Domestic Affairs. Duties remain undetermined, leaving open whether the panel will advance a comprehensive civil rights program.

Secretary of State William P. Rogers returns from a two week, 18000 mile trip through Europe and the Mideast with a cautiously hopeful briefing for President Nixon. He sees narrowed gaps and notes both sides incline toward peace while eyeing a possible Suez Canal reopening as a starting point.
Administration sources say eight undecided senators will decide the Senate outcome on extending the draft beyond June 30. About 45 favor extension, 45 oppose, with 10 undecided as debate begins amid antiwar opposition and proposed amendments.
