Ivan Smout of Janesville retires after 36 years with General Motors in Janesville, plans early travel with wife Anita Heffschmidt, enjoys fishing and hunting, has a daughter and son, and is son of Katie Loeffel Smout and Len Smout. Alvin O. Keesey of Orfordville also retires after long GM tenure in 1928, with wife Agnes Hendrickson, residing in Orfordville. Phyllis Bleisch Hemming of Janesville, a Department of Social Services clerk typist since 1961, moves with her parents from Monroe era. she has a son Stephen and a large recipe-book collection. AP News in Brief reports 72,750 workers were affected by GM plant strikes or cut work weeks, including 36,100 striking at seven Assembly Division plants and one Fisher Body plant, with 36,750 laid off or reduced hours at other facilities.
