Chinese forces claim to have shattered the Japanese line in western Hunan near Chihkiang after a strong counteroffensive. Reports say the Japanese line collapsed at 4 p.m. Wednesday as the 14th air force disrupted enemy communications and multiple sectors were driven back.
A massive carrier task force launched over 400 bombers against Japan's homeland oil facilities including the Tokuyama synthetic fuel plant. Smoke rose to 15 000 feet as the raid continued, highlighting Japan's dwindling domestic oil supplies.
Field Marshal Albert Kesselring told U S war correspondents he was surprised Hitler did not lead a Berlin defense. He described Hitler as healthy in mid April and noted the Fuehrer would have welcomed peace with Britain and America if possible.

Mary Seefeldt five year old, daughter of Arthur and Mrs Seefeldt, drowned today while playing with her brothers at the Western Lime and Cement company pool in Brillion Wisconsin.
Snowfall in May covered ground up to over an inch in many spots before melting by noon. Damaging cold and weight of wet flakes snapped limbs and prompted police calls to clear streets. By afternoon the temperature rose above 50 degrees and sunny skies returned as forecasters warned of a chilly night and a warmer next day.
Dean H. Kuebli aged 5 died at St. Clare hospital from injuries after a rope slipped and the freight elevator cage trapped him at Monroe roller mills. A coroner’s jury declined an inquest. He was born July 9 1939 in Monroe and survived by his parents, a brother, and three grandparents. Funeral services are set for Saturday at Shriner Neuschwander funeral home with burial in Greenwood cemetery.
Prague radio reports President Eduard Benes has arrived back in Czechoslovakia’s capital, returning to Prague from exile that began after the 1938 Munich crisis. The AP dispatch notes the historic homecoming during wartime broadcasts.
Paris Associated Press correspondent Edward Kennedy says officials delayed his Reims surrender report as political censorship not military security. SHAEF chief Brig. Gen. Frank A. Allen and Gen. Eisenhower cited secrecy to protect lives and negotiations with German and Russian commands. Kennedy notes Eisenhower announced surrender at 12:01 a.m. May 9.
The joint finance committee heard a bill to fund highway costs from current year revenues, cancel about 20 million dollars owed from the general fund, and preserve 455 thousand dollars in county highway bonds. Senator Gawronski introduced a separate measure to raise legislators’ salaries from 100 to 350 dollars monthly for the first four months of each session.
Senator Teehan says the measure would save employers millions annually by eliminating penalties after unemployment drains and setting lower postwar rates. The bill, passed under suspension of the rules, moves back to the assembly after senate amendments. Also, the senate declined to reconsider an anti gambling bill and took final action on a community currency exchange measure.
The House passed 288 to 88 to grant the House a voice alongside the Senate in treaty negotiations. Members voting yes included Democrats Biemiller Wasielewski, Republicans Byrnes Henry Keefe Murray Stevenson, and Progressive Hull. the sole recorded dissent was Wisconsin’s Smith. O Konski was not recorded. Hook voted aye. Bradley was not recorded.
The attorney general announced under legislative mandate the launch of John Doe proceedings before Circuit Judge Herman W. Sachtsen to determine if illegal lobbying occurred against Gov. Goodland's anti gambling bill.
AP reports Gen Brehon Somervell confirming the army will land on the China coast to unload thousands of tons of cargo for the war against Japan. He cites a scarcity of qualified civilians in the Pacific and notes soldiers will handle the bulk of unloading, with some support expected from the Philippines and along China's coast.
The War Department announced a point system for discharge of ground, air and service forces. A total of 85 points will qualify enlisted men for release next week to separation centers, with separate scores for each service to follow in about six weeks. About 1.3 million men are to be released in 12 months. combat, overseas, service, and parenthood credits determine eligibility, with a 44 point limit for women in the WAC. Officers face stricter criteria due to training and responsibility, and releases prioritize military necessity while preserving required replacements and specialized skills for the Pacific theater.
More than five hundred Monroe women attended the county Homemakers Day at Turner hall. Miss Marlys Richert led the program with Miss Gladys Melcode speaking on clothing and a salon style dress parade playlet narrated by Mrs Henry Babler and featuring Mrs George Stauffacher as musician.

The government will open steel copper and aluminum supplies to civilian goods manufacturers on July 1. War Production Board officials plan an early announcement. Restrictions on producing consumer hard goods will ease, with autos trucks and stores remaining restricted until materials flow more freely.
Rev. and Mrs. Alvin C. Rabehl and daughter Jean Marie with W. J. Stauffacher left today for Appleton to attend the annual Immanuel Evangelical conference for several days. Pastors assignments will be made Saturday morning at the convention. Rev. Rabehl completes his 14th year as pastor of the Monroe assembly.
Twenty one miners died in an explosion at Utah Fuel Company No 1 mine in Sunnyside yesterday. Seven were injured with three in critical condition and taken to hospitals as rescue workers continued searching the tunnels for additional victims.
Treasury Secretary Morgenthau said the administration opposes any tax cuts until Japan is defeated. He stated the need for all revenues during the war and did not elaborate on Senator George’s 1946 income tax reduction proposal, keeping the position unchanged.
