Milwaukee archdiocese outlined a four year college component for Fond du Lac Catholic schools creating a K-16 system with six elementary schools a high school and Marian College. The plan would replace grade evaluations and faced opposition over church oversight and independence.
George Hartman announces resignation as Green County extension agent and office chairman effective July 1 to take the same posts in Marathon County Wausau. He began in 1960 as a farm management agent, became office chairman in 1968, earned degrees in dairy science, and was honored for 20 years of service in 1970. Moving with his wife Anna and four children, Hartman looks to attend Farm Progress Days in Marathon County 1974.
A Tuesday evening blaze at the Ludlow Bar outside sign in Wis 11 West caused minor damage to the sign and mounting wood. Monroe Fire Department responded in about 20 minutes and Fire Chief Joe Benkett identified electrical wiring as the cause.
Three teachers retire this year as the Monroe Education Association holds its Spring Banquet at 6 30 p m May 14 in Monroe High School gym. Honorees are Mrs Glenn Langston Miss Doris Messmer and Mrs Verona West. Certificates for 20 years teaching will be awarded by Donald Ogden. Attendance includes school board members administrators and editors. The event features a Rainbow themed social in the gym with emcees Noel Soltau and Mrs Larry Leopold and entertainment by Joseph Rieraldo and the high school Jazz Ensemble.
Egil Bud Krogh resigns as undersecretary of transportation amid pressure from Secretary Claude Brinegar over his role in the Ellsberg break in. Krogh acknowledges the burglary was beyond instructions and cites national security considerations in his resignation letter.
Sister Wilfreda was honored at a dinner marking ten years as hospital administrator at St. Clare in Wisconsin. She stepped down to focus on future planning as a large $812 million expansion and ongoing remodeling progress, with Fr. Campion and Harold Miller praising her leadership and the hospital’s family approach.
The Mississippi River stayed above flood level in St Louis for the 60th day. It rose to 37.5 feet, 7.5 feet over flood stage, as crests higher toward 39 feet. Massive flooding across Illinois Missouri Kentucky Tennessee Arkansas Mississippi and Louisiana has left 39,000 homeless and caused about 409.6 million dollars in damage.
In Madison the Assembly, led by Democrats, rejected GOP efforts to mail $165 million in tax relief as part of a $2.7 billion biennial budget. Republicans also opposed Luceys power equalization plan for school funding and challenges to teacher retirement funding, amid closed-door caucuses and partisan reform talks.
Republicans target a plan requiring school districts with state aid to cover pension and Social Security costs for teachers. John Shabaz calls it unfair to local taxpayers. Sensenbrenner warns the local burden could total 163.4 million over the biennium as districts face large payments.
