AP News In Brief from San Juan reports the Navy says three Soviet ships entered the Mona Passage off western Puerto Rico around 2 a.m. today and are being watched by US planes. A second group with a Kresta class cruiser a Kanin class destroyer and an oiler was about 250 miles behind.
In Chicago AP report, defense attorney Frank Oliver tells U.S. District Court the 11 defendants are insane and deluded that cherished institutions are being perverted. He says opening statements assert their delusions prove insanity. The trial begins with the group charged in the raid on a Selective Service office.
Professors Joseph Elder and Allen Fox, joined by Democratic gubernatorial candidate Donald C. Peterson of Eau Claire, urged impeachment of President Nixon over Southeast Asia policy. Elder described circulating petition to prompt Congress to begin impeachment, while all three denounced campus violence.
Senate Democrats with Republican blessing push an amendment to cut off funds for U S operations in Cambodia. It could reach a Senate vote by end of next week with a House path unlikely after the chamber previously rejected curbs on the Cambodia incursion.
An army unit, the 3rd Battalion 8th Infantry 4th Division, is discussing court-martial proceedings against five American soldiers who refused to take part in a combat assault into Cambodia. The unit encountered heavy resistance after being flown into a Cambodian landing zone two days earlier surrounded by camouflaged enemy positions.
The Senate ethics clash over Haynsworth led the entire ninth circuit to recuse from cases with potential conflicts. The move followed the rejection of Judge Haynsworth for the Supreme Court and paves the way for President Nixon to nominate Judge Harry A. Blackmun from the same circuit.
About 25 former volunteers occupied six fourth floor offices at Peace Corps headquarters in Washington in a protest against U.S. policy in Southeast Asia. They displayed a National Liberation Front flag from a window before Peace Corps officials persuaded them to remove it.
Washington reports a sharp rise in unemployment from 4.4 to 4.8 percent, the highest in five years, with about 300000 more jobless. Men show increases, teens rise to 15.7 percent, while earnings rise slightly for rank and file workers but purchasing power falls due to inflation.
Barneveld Wisconsin hosts the first Barneveld Tulip Festival on May 10 to honor Barneveld Holland. The event marks the 30th anniversary of the Nazi invasion of Netherlands in World War II with a colorful island parade, Dutch dances by Jane Farwell students, and a Grandparents King and Queen selection honoring senior community leaders.
Monroe High School principal Ben Campa announces two new scholarships by families of former students. The Richard Holyoke Scholarship offers 100 dollars with first award in 1970 71, favoring agriculture majors at vocational or technical programs. The Phyllis Beer Scholarship provides 150 dollars with preference for nursing program entrants.
Supt Amos Johnson announced the Pleasant View Nursing Home will be dedicated and open to the public on May 16 and 17. The dedication begins at 1 30 p m May 16 with the open house to follow. Tours of the new facility run continuously May 17.
Fred H. Harrington resigned today as President of the University of Wisconsin scene of four days of violent antiwar demonstrations. He becomes a history professor Oct. 1. He cited crisis timing and said resignation was his idea, not forced. Demonstrations spread, National Guard deployed, and campus disruptions continued across Wisconsin.
Washington braces for a massive antiwar march as President Nixon plans a 9 p.m. CDT news conference. Demonstrations near the White House and Capitol Hill intensify, with Kent State deaths triggering nationwide student protests and security measures including the DC National Guard.
Jack Fernan, candidate for State Assembly from Green and LaFayette Counties on an independent ticket, spoke to about 450 at the Stoughton High School Senior Honors Banquet on May 6. His talk urged student responsibility and contrasted three R's with three new R's repression revolution reconciliation. On May 6 he also spoke to 75 women at the Brodhead United Methodist Church Women’s event about reconciliation.
Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces shelled South Vietnam’s northern provinces with rockets and mortars. In Cambodia operations, 50 South Vietnamese troops were killed and 200 wounded in heavy fighting near the Parrot’s Beak. Saigon says 234 Viet Cong killed and 106 captured as 30,000 U.S. and South Vietnamese troops push bases and depots.
Monroe police detained three youths early Thursday after solving burglaries at four local businesses over two days. The 16 and 17 year old Monticello youths and a youth from Elgin were linked to break ins at South Side Pure Oil Goecks D X Filling Station Brennan's Market Eugene Hotel and Stocker Motor Sales. They admitted stealing liquor from a local bar and a vehicle break in in Monroe High School lot.
