Nationwide primary results show Taft winning Ohio and Glenn finishing strong despite withdrawal. Wallace claims credit for denting liberal gains as Goldwater gains Indiana votes while Stassen lags. Alabama supports Wallace with unpledged electors amid regional shifts and local races, including Florida governor hopefuls and New Mexico nominating contests.
Heavy rain and high winds affected Ashland and Bayfield Counties. One and a half inches fell at Ashland Junction. A wall blew out of the Odanah post office and store. roofs were damaged. A Benoit barn burned from lightning. A tornado destroyed farms near Sanborn and Ashland, with workers taking cover, and a Radosevich barn burned due to lightning.
Wallace claimed a protest vote victory in Indiana while Gov. Welsh kept President Johnson ahead in the Indiana primary. Wallace blamed Republicans for ballot switches and argued the win signals conservative strength. Welsh dismissed the result as wishful thinking and rallied against Wallace’s civil rights stance.
In Saigon South Viet Nam the body of a 10th American was recovered from the charred wreckage of a U S Army transport plane that crashed on takeoff from Tan Hiep. The victims include two Army officers one Marine officer an Army warrant officer and six soldiers along with six Vietnamese personnel. Investigators weigh mechanical failure against possible ground fire in the area as the crash remains under inquiry.
Washington Secretary Freeman calls a 22 member advisory committee to meet May 18 and 19 to discuss actions to bolster cattle prices. The Johnson administration is deeply concerned as prices hit 18 year lows and many cattlemen lose money. The committee includes producers processors packers consumers and the department. The beef purchase program launched after the March meeting has not yet raised prices. The department cites over expansion in cattle production as a major cause.
John B. Hutson, 73, former United States undersecretary of agriculture, died of a heart attack while en route to a hospital in Brussels, as reported by the U.S. embassy. Hutson retired in 1946.
Clark County District Attorney Everett Gorsegner announced a formal inquiry into the Owen Dairy Co. financial affairs after the plant closed. He will meet with state agriculture auditors and subpoenaGripentrog Jr. and associates to probe bank assignments and the firm’s deficit, noting net worth listed as 60 000 to 120 000 while the plant reportedly faced substantial losses.
Madison GOP leaders denounce Gov Reynolds plan for 1964 legislative district realignment. Assemblyman William Steiger warns Milwaukee County seat increases would wipe out multiple GOP members and force incumbents to face each other. The plan seeks 25 or 26 Milwaukee seats and redraws Senate districts, with new maps due by May 15.

A 75 year old bachelor named Fred Sawyer was found dead in a burning chair after a small house fire near Waupaca. The coroner said Sawyer likely died of a heart attack while smoking in the chair.
The market inched toward new highs this afternoon with active first hour volume. Gains were narrow and led by steels and utilities with chemicals and oils rising slightly. Autos and airlines were irregular while Jones and Laughlin rose near 2 percent and Sears Roebuck slipped about 1 percent as Woolworth gained almost 1 percent.
After 49 days of talks the Senate moves to a voting stage on a jury trial amendment offered by Sen. Thurston Morton. The result is not expected to be decisive but could serve as an ice breaker in the ongoing marathon debate. Leader Mansfield hopes to complete votes tonight or Thursday though no guarantee exists.
Milwaukee patrolman John J. Orlikowski, 35, was shot in the arm and leg while intercepting two masked holdup suspects fleeing a food store. He was in fair condition. detectives questioned three men arrested nearby as robbers reportedly took about $569 from the cashier.
Mrs H A Babcock longtime Lawrence College trustee and widow of a Kimberly Clark Corp executive died Tuesday after a year's illness. She was 84.
The Kennedy round of tariff talks won a ringing endorsement from 75 nations led by the United States Britain and the Common Market. They backed a 50 percent tariff cut goal though France objected to making it the official aim. Talks opened under GATT and may last two years with links to agriculture non-tariff barriers and special health rules for imports.
The destroyer Decatur and aircraft carrier Lake Champlain collided about 150 miles east of Cape Henry during anti submarine warfare operations. No injuries were reported. the Decatur suffered heavy superstructure damage while no below deck damage was evident. One aircraft aboard the Lake Champlain was damaged.
President De Gaulle, 73, who had prostate surgery on April 17, intends a lengthy tour of South America next autumn, according to French sources.
