In a ferocious Pacific clash about 325 miles from Japan, Japanese vessels and air power attacked American forces but five U S ships were sunk and many damaged. About 154 Japanese planes were shot down and several suicide boats destroyed as amphibious units attempted landings behind U S lines.
Allied forces declared near total victory as Patton’s Third Army advanced into Austria and Linz, while German Seventh Army held out in Patton’s zone. Norway’s status remained uncertain amid claims of capitulation talks and Quisling urged obedience.

Capt Fred F West, 70, former Monroe mayor and commanding officer of Co H of the Wisconsin National Guard, died at his home after a long illness. He enlisted at 16 in 1890, became captain in 1895, and led Co H to a first ranking in 1897. He and his lieutenants were noted military examples. Co H rose to top rating under his command.
The high school band led by Allan F. Barnard presents a children's program Monday at 1 PM in the auditorium. The program features Star Spangled Banner and a varied lineup including Vic tory Garden Suite, Starant march, and a Podunk Village band novelty. An unknown guest conductor will lead the band in King Cotton, with the finale America sung by the audience. The 80-member ensemble will wear full uniform. seating limited to about 800.

Sheriff R H Schoonover corrected a Madison statement stating punchboards were selling fags in Green County and said investigations found violations in Rock Grant and Lafayette counties but none in Green County. No punchboards slot machines or gambling devices were found there.

The emphasis targets the May 14 to June 9 four week period and aims to exceed quotas, especially boosting small investor E bond sales to curb inflation. Federal Judge Elwyn R. Shaw sentenced Lester James Van Brunt to a year and a day in a federal penitentiary on charges of impersonating an FBI agent and violating the Mann Act. Van Brunt, 31, had initially pleaded not guilty before changing to guilty.
About 50 B 29s targeted three southern Kyushu airfields in the day’s third neutralization raid on the Japanese homeland. Earlier 150 to 200 Superfortresses attacked the Hiro naval aircraft plant at Kure on Honshu, marking the first assault on Kure war industry.

Secretary of State Stettinius said he asked Russia for a full explanation of the arrest of Polish democratic leaders and that talks on widening the Soviet backed Warsaw government must await Russia’s reply. Molotov informed Eden and Stettinius the leaders were arrested on diversionist charges against the red army. A British statement called the Russian action most serious.
Moscow radio announced 16 Polish leaders were arrested by Soviet military authorities for security reasons. The broadcast named the group head as a known Polish General and accused him of sabotage against the Red Army rear, claiming Britain remains silent on his disappearance. The 16 are said to be in Moscow under military custody.
AP reports British troops cross into Denmark at Krusaa and reach Copenhagen. Aftonbladet claims Doenitz and Goering in Oslo. Prague rises against Germans amid chaos with riots feared. Red Army frees Slovakia and advances toward Vienna to link with American forces.
