Monroe wrapped its first 1 day music festival with three contest bands in the high school auditorium before 800 attendees and a Lincoln gym dance for visiting students. The single day format drew larger participation than the 1940 and 1941 fests and earned praise for the streamlined schedule.
Nearly 1,100 musicians from 13 high schools competed in solos ensembles and events for medals and certificates awarded by the Wisconsin High School Music Association. Monroe alto band emerged top among class A entries praising its Poet and Peasant rendition though the crowd enjoyed a lighter finale Alexander’s Ragtime Band not played.
Officials in Wisconsin said the state lacks statutory authority to enforce coal conserving steps during the coal crisis. A Chicago dairy firm requested coal priorities for its Clayton plant as fuel supplies dwindle. Ernest Ufer, 9, died from a skull fracture at St. Clare hospital after being struck by a car driven by Lt. E L Tomlinson on Highway 11 west of South Wayne. Funeral services for L. O. Brainard 94 oldest Lone Rock resident and brother of Charles C. Brainard Monroe were held after his death on Thursday. Born in New York state he moved to Bear Valley in 1867 and later ran an aviary. Surviving relatives include two brothers and several sisters and a son Harry Brainard.
