Heavy rain soaked Wisconsin with floods in waterlogged areas. By early today showers and thunderstorms spread, then snow and sleet hit northwestern portions as a storm moved across the state.
President Nixon assigns Vice President Spiro T. Agnew as vice chairman of the Domestic Council to deepen his role in domestic policy. Agnew will liaison with governors and local officials while Ehrlichman remains separate from Agnew's duties.
In two days of talks with President Nixon, West German Chancellor Willy Brandt voiced full agreement that continued close cooperation with European allies is essential amid global change. Nixon met economic advisers and Vice President Agnew amid talk of tighter wage price controls and stronger enforcement to curb inflation. Kissinger said North Vietnam agreed to a meeting with Le Duc Tho, though timing remains uncertain. Bombings hit two Catholic churches and a school in Londonderry after a court decision involving a Protestant teen. Defense heads prepare for questions on Nixon aid policy before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Ehrlichman defense lawyers push for public disclosure of Watergate links in the Pentagon Papers case.
Former Texas Governor and Treasury secretary John B. Connally announces he is leaving the Democratic Party to join the Republicans. He hints at a possible 1976 GOP presidential bid and says the party better reflects his views and can unite Americans amid Watergate fallout.
The council held a busy session approving two rezoning readings for a trailer park and an apartment complex, setting public hearings for June 5. It authorized attendance at a Fire Mechanics School and a police conference, funded park and fund accounts, approved fire engine and police squad payments, and allowed helicopter landings and band shell use for events. Five Monroe High School pupils Carol Marti Bernie Rast Peggy Young Marty Culhane and John Easter will travel to Atlantic City New Jersey for the 27th annual DECA Career Development Conference May 6 9 They are among 50 Wisconsin participants chosen for the event which gathers more than 4200 DECA members from across the United States and Puerto Rico The students earned their spots by placing at the State Leadership Conference in Green Lake and will join Wisconsin peers at Mitchell Field Milwaukee for the chartered flight The group will return May 10 with national officers election and talks by leaders in marketing education and government on their agenda
