Thousands gathered on the New Haven Green near Yale and the courthouse for a second day of protests supporting jailed Black Panthers led by Bobby Seale. Police estimate 12 000 to 15 000 attended as pretrial hearings for eight Panthers proceed amid clashes and an explosion.
President Nixon agreed to a Tuesday face to face session with four congressional panels after the Senate Foreign Relations Committee insisted on prior consultation. The committee voted unanimously to demand the meeting as part of congressional oversight over U S ground troop deployments. In Fort Worth seven men were indicted on 20 counts for conspiring to supply defective parts for the F111 fighter. No mention of the Las Vegas crash or grounding was included in the indictment.
Fierce three day fighting in South Vietnam the I Corps zone centers on Hiep Duc district town with house to house combat while enemy attacks press U S Special Forces camps. Official U S sources call the surge a regional high point offensive by the Communist command.

Some 25 to 30 volunteers will depart at 7 a.m. from City Hall with tools to clear timber, brush, and build trails, aided by a tractor and wagon. Dewey Dwyer will be chef for the day.
U S and South Vietnamese troops overran base camps in Cambodia within 70 miles northwest of Saigon striking toward an enemy held town. They uncovered a bunker complex with rice stores and evacuated battalion sized camps. Caverns and underground hospitals were searched as enemy movements continued west and north into Cambodia. The offensive aims to disrupt supply lines and deny base value through the rainy season.

Washington AP reports the House will take up a bill next week to raise Social Security benefits for retirees by about 5 percent and raise payroll taxes for active workers. The Ways and Means Committee nearly finished the measure before adjourning for the weekend, building on last year’s 15 percent increase.

Kittelsen will chair the Monroe Citizens Forum on Education in Monroe High School on May 6 at 8 p.m. The meeting invites parents students and taxpayers from Green Lafayette and Rock Counties to review the Governor's Commission on Education proposals, including a proposed State Education Board and shifts in funding and control of public education.
