Las Vegas Noah Dietrich has begun legal proceedings to contest Howard Hughes will. Dietrich’s attorney says the estate may not be settled for a long time while Melvin Dummar, a former miner and milkman, is noted for picking up hitchhikers and is discussed as a possible Hughes heir.
Washington reports higher airline fares taking effect today signaling steeper travel costs for flyers. In related notes, farm prices rose 2 percent last month on cattle and hogs, hinting at pricier meat for shoppers, while Spiro Agnew ends a near two year silence to discuss topics including a new novel but avoids his Nixon era service.
Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger says the United States would recognize Soviet backed Angola only after all Cuban troops are expelled. He rejects claims that U S support for black rule in Rhodesia could trigger a massacre. Cecil Jones VFW Post 2312 schedules a two day Bicentennial celebration in Monroe starting Saturday July 3 at the Green County Fairgrounds. A talent show, food stand, beer garden, free rides, bucket brigade, square dancing, pony rides and a German Polka Band highlight events with local antique car clubs also planned. Fortified by Monroe Fire Department cooperation the event aims to mark the nation’s 200th birthday with a county wide picnic and entertainment.
The Monroe Arts and Activities Center board heard an upbeat update on the current fundraising campaign and ongoing efforts to preserve the town's landmark. A Bake and Rummage sale by Friends of MARC on April 15-16 raised 380.35 with proceeds benefiting Project Understanding in Kemper County.
Gov Patrick J. Lucey signed an inheritance tax reform bill in the Iowa County Courthouse Dodgeville ceremony attended by about 100 farm wives and officials. The law treats joint tenancy as an equal partnership and limits inheritance tax to the widow’s half, a move praised by state Sen Kathy Morrison as a boon for farm owners in an agricultural area.
