Assembly Democrats staged a lengthy caucus before lining up to oppose a GOP sponsored anti abortion resolution. GOP sources claimed Democrats pressured members with leadership threats to secure the vote, a charge Democrats labeled as political maneuvering after a failed GOP strategy.
The FCC asks CBS to answer charges the documentary The Selling of the Pentagon was unfair. CBS has 20 days to respond while congressional investigators press for unused material, but CBS rejects providing it, warning of a chilling effect on news reporting.
The National Railroad Passenger Corporation started operations at 12:01 a.m. with 182 trains across 314 cities on 21 routes and 20,600 miles of track. Twenty railroads drop 178 trains as Amtrak unifies service to restore profitability amid losses.
A pipe bomb damaged a Bank of America branch in Santa Cruz, breaking windows at nearby homes. It marked the 35th arson or bombing assault on the bank in 15 months, with $10,000 in bank damage. Letters claimed by young radicals cited capitalist exploitation.
The Army Corps of Engineers approved a flood protection plan for Prairie du Chien Wisconsin relocating hundreds of residents. It buys 172 homes and businesses in the flood plain and moves 33 buildings while flood proving 40 more at a total of 2.3 million dollars for park and recreation land. City officials back the project.
Leslie Bacon, 19, a peace worker jailed over the March 1 bombing, returns to the federal grand jury as her lawyers argue earlier questions were unrelated to the attack.
Keith H. Monte of Monroe was taken to St. Clare Hospital after his car was forced off the road by an oncoming vehicle at 1:46 a.m. The car struck a Wisconsin Power and Light pole, broke it, and was towed from the scene. Monte suffered a bump over the right eye and pain in his neck and right knee. Police cited no other immediate details.
More than 235 Kiwanis members guests and visiting Kiwanis officials attend the Monroe Kiwanis Club golden anniversary dinner at the VFW Club Monday May 3 social hour at 6 dinner at 7 with O L Enstad district governor as main speaker and Mart A Krueger lieutenant governor present. The club began in March 1921 with 50 businessmen meeting and 18 forming a temporary organization later permanent in May 1921.
Washington braces for antiwar protests as 7,300 police and National Guardsmen, plus six Pentagon helicopters, prepare to secure 21 traffic choke points near four Potomac bridges. Demonstrators plan disruptions Monday and Tuesday, with estimates ranging from 5,000 to 50,000 in various briefings and events.

Capt. Danny Terry of Fifth Army Headquarters at Madison presented Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ritschard of Monticello with posthumous Bronze Stars Purple Heart Good Conduct Medal and Combat Infantry Badge for their son Roger who died Nov. 22 1970 in Vietnam. He served in Company C 1st Battalion 501st Infantry and was mortally wounded leading a patrol after tripping a booby trap near Fire Support Base Bastogne. He was promoted to Corporal and burial was in Highland Cemetery Monticello after services at Zwingli United Church of Christ on Dec. 3 1970.
A federal grand jury in Harrisburg returns a 10 count indictment against eight activists alleging plans to kidnap Henry Kissinger for a mock war crimes trial and to blow tunnels under federal buildings. New defendants include Mary Scoblick and John Glick. Glick serves 18 months for prior vandalism.
Mr. and Mrs. Willy Finger of Wettingen Switzerland visit Monroe with their son Hans Peter and Willy's brother in a reunion after 50 years. They tour New Glarus Spring Green and House on the Rock, stay with Mrs. Frieda Frey and plan to depart May 10 after seeing relatives in the Midwest and Chicago area.
