Wisconsin Legislature votes on pay raises and transit plan

The Wisconsin Senate approved a constitutional amendment to let the legislature raise Supreme Court salaries during terms, after voters rejected similar raises in a recent referendum. The plan would set chief justice at 26,000 and new justices at 25,000, with circuit court pay at 20,000. The Senate also passed a bill to create a southeastern transit authority and a separate measure allowing taverns to sell beer and liquor during election hours, which the Assembly preliminarily approved before opposition halted final passage. The Assembly also killed a bill restricting auto insurance cancellations and backed a resolution urging Congress to adopt Edmund Zawacki’s open cities plan for USSR-US youth exchanges.
