The Clothes Closet, Joe's civic effort sponsored by the Monroe Woman's Club, operates Wednesdays 1 to 4 pm at the Community Center 1509 11th Street. Launched March 4, it offers free clothing year round with private basement access and volunteer staff, aided by referrals from churches and schools.
Red Cross bloodmobile will visit Central junior high school gym in Monroe Thursday from 1 30 to 6 30 p m. Appointments are available by calling the Red Cross Chamber of Commerce office or Dr C Gene Hennager recruitment chair. Walk ins welcome with hope to exceed 150 pints and a special need for Rh negative donors especially type O negative.
General Douglas MacArthur remains in critical condition with improved kidney function after a setback. Doctors report intermittent esophageal bleeding controlled by a tube, while heart function and vital signs are stable.

Madison police launched a wide-day search for a man tied to an abduction attempt on a six year old girl. Mrs. Leon Binger 26 foiled the attempt grabbing her daughter Carol as the driver started away dragging her 30 feet before releasing the child a few blocks from their home.
Alabama governor George Wallace spoke to about 400 at an Eagles Club gathering in La Crosse while a college student read a critical statement. He repeated his opposition to the civil rights bill and federal growth, saying critics label opponents as fanatics. Reynolds, Wisconsin governor, said Wallace supporters are fanatics of the far right and pledged to press the campaign in Milwaukee and other cities.
Gov John W Reynolds proclaims May 8 as Harry S Truman Day in Wisconsin to mark the former president’s 20th birthday anniversary and honor his public service and private life. The governor praises Truman and notes the state’s admiration and support.
Washington veteran Senator Len B. Nelson accepted Gov. Reynolds invitation to speak at a Madison dinner Sunday night. He aims to highlight opposition to George Wallace in Wisconsin's presidential primary and to repudiate Wallace's record on civil rights and liberty. Nelson criticizes Wallace for alleged racism and interference with local schools.
Norman Wood of Milwaukee is named permanent conservation warden for the Monroe district office. A father of two and veteran Wisconsin Conservation Department officer, Wood will attend a Green County Conservation League directors meeting at 8 p m Thursday in the City hotel, joined by Louis Oshesky. He succeeds Harold A Pederson, now retired, and will lead an expanded district serving Rock, Green and Lafayette Counties with state staff support continuing.
Fred Feldt Jr Juda and Mrs Mildred Malcock Brodhead earned one gallon pins at the Red Cross Bloodmobile in Brodhead. The event at Bank of Brodhead gathered 53 pints from 63 registrants with 20 walk-ins and nine rejections. Delbert Heins chaired, Tony Williams recruited, Mrs Donald Condon was the Red Cross nurse, and Mrs A O Lehnherr was the operational manager.
Mrs. Ray E. Kundert 51, Monroe resident and county clerk’s wife, died at St. Clare hospital from post surgery complications. Surviving husband, three daughters, siblings, and four grandchildren. Services Thursday at Union Presbyterian church with burial in Greenwood cemetery.
