Peiping claimed it crushed the Tibet uprising and installed the Panchen Lama as head of a new regime. Premier Chou En Lai ordered abolition of the Dalai Lama’s government, while the Dalai Lama was said to be abducted by rebels. Peiping said 4,000 rebels were captured and stressed the Panchen Lama would chair the preparatory Tibet Autonomous regime.

One Driver Dies In Highway Race
A high speed highway race in Wisconsin leaves Randall G. Daebler dead and four others injured. Daebler, 18, Clintonville, collided with another vehicle on Highway 45 near Appleton after reportedly traveling up to 195 mph. An injured passenger, Ervin E. Arndt, 21, Ogdensburg, claimed the crash followed a 100 to 195 mph run. ice caused Daebler’s car to skid and hit a second car. In separate incidents Alvin Bistline, 71, was decapitated when his car veered onto a semi, and John R. Marchand, 16, Green Bay, died from injuries after a collision with a Milwaukee Road train.

Dane County authorities ruled the deaths of two New Glarus women a drowning tragedy not an inquest. The auto collision occurred Thursday between 3 30 and 4 p m as the car skidded on icy pavement and plunged into Badger Mill creek south of Verona. Mrs. Wilbert Zweifel and Mrs. Goldie Seeholzer were found dead. Mrs. Zweifel drove the car and Mrs. Seeholzer was thrown clear. Funeral services set for 2 and 3 p m with burial in the church cemetery for Zweifel and Seeholzer to be buried in Driggs Idaho. Both women active in Swiss United Church of Christ groups.
