The Pentagon defends the Sheridan light tank amid claims of defects, citing a favorable war-zone report after six weeks of use in Vietnam. The debate follows Rep. Stratton’s charges that the weapon was rushed to Vietnam.
Albany voters will decide April 1 on a scheme to build a fire station and community building at the old Paidar site with village offices. Plans show the location and shell construction with interior finish to come later financed over 40 years, costing about 75 000 dollars, raising village taxes by around 24 percent. The Albany Lions Club endorsed the project, and financing details include one third aid from Albany Township and fund drives for finishing.
John Deininger, son of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Deininger of Monroe Route 2, won first place in the Section 5 FFA speaking contest at Waunakee. Larry Buetzer of Browntown took second in creed recitation. Deininger advances to the state speaking contest in June at Green Lake, Wis.
Doctors at Walter Reed report former President Dwight D. Eisenhower growing weaker with congestive heart failure. He remains in critical condition, sleeping more, yet lucid when awake, as Mamie stays at his side. President Nixon visited briefly, praising the meeting with his former boss.
Monroe public schools end classes Friday March 28 and begin spring break with classes resuming Monday April 7. St Victor's Parochial School also dismisses Friday March 28 for conferences and resumes April 7 after Easter.
The First Presbyterian Church of Phillips Wisconsin unanimously calls Rev Geritt E Mouw from Union Presbyterian Church The church session calls a congregational meeting for Sunday April 20 to dissolve pastoral relations with Madison Presbytery consent He will terminate service on June 15 1969 after serving since July 1 1958
Monroe School Board president Rodney Kittelsen said negotiations with teachers are ongoing and no settlement has been reached yet. He expressed hope for a settlement in the near future.
The Green County Homemakers Spring Council met yesterday at Immanuel United Methodist Church Monroe adopting the Life Lines theme and electing officers. Mrs Alois Mayer Monroe was elected vice president and Mrs Erwin Rufener Argyle secretary. Hold over officers include Mrs Walter Douglas Brodhead president and Mrs John Hillbrand Monroe treasurer. The election was held in morning sessions with slate presented by Mrs Ralph Siedschlag and Mrs Leland Kubly. Tellers were Mrs Eugene Stuckey Juda and Mrs Jake Senn Browntown.
The city Civil Defense Auxiliary Police presented a 20 minute slide show on tornado awareness at the Community Center. Ervin Goecks heads the unit and said the slides will be available to organizations via requests to Goecks or CD director Theodore Weiss. Siren tests are scheduled for next Wednesday at noon to ready Monroe for the spring season. Bruno Traven, 89, author of The Treasure of Sierra Madre, died in Mexico City of a heart attack. he kept his origin secret and distrusted publicity.
